Lloyd's have been very good to me and have a current account that comes with a range of free gifts like cinema tickets or magazine subscription and a good rate of interest. The account is free to operate if you pay your wage in, otherwise its £5 a month.

Lloyds bank were crap for me, I was with them for about 12 years I won't go into circumstances but I was glad to leave them, I'm with the Cooperative bank now and very pleased.

HSBC for both business and personal banking, been very happy with the service for 15 years or more.

No such thing as a good bank, just some that are less worse than others.

You may not find it easy to open an account without a UK address and being on the electoral roll, D41.

Bank of mattress, seems to yield more interest than the high street ones!

(y) Another vote for First Direct here, best bank I have been with by a huge margin IMHO.

For various reasons I also bank with Barklies, Santader & Lloyds, but none of them even come close to FD.

Incidentally believe that the Swiss branch of their parent company have proved useful for you international playboy types D41.

Depends what you want it for! If you're over here for a while, you might consider one of the 'premium' bank accounts. I pay for my bank account with Lloyds but with that I get free travel insurance, mobile insurance, aa membership etc.

I would stick to no more than £500 unless you want the money laundering squad to investigate

It used to be anything under £9k, and the bank doesn't inform HMRC, at least thet was the case 7 yrs ago.
