Spiders are my hobby

I first kept them when I was a teenager. A couple of them lived for about 15 years so I had them up to my early thirties. I got back into the hobby a few years ago. It's mostly tarantulas but I've got a few huntsmen, wandering and orb spiders.

So I'm experimenting with scratch effect fluid. I don't know if my idea will come out as well as I can see I'm my head!

I've added some dabs of paint in areas on a black surface. I then gave it a Matt coat and will wait until fully hardened before spraying a few coats of scratch fluid on top of that. Then I spray my final camouflage on top. The idea is to wet the final camouflage in ideas and go at it with either a short stiff bristled brush or a tooth pick (depending on look you are going for) which exposes what's underneath the matt coat.

Time will tell if I have done a good job at it. It looks a mess right now!

I will use these pics as a reference to where I have placed the dabs of paint

I have also taken an idea from D for camaflouge net. I've paint it, although it looks just dark green there is a couple of shades of green in them and also a brown, although it's hard to notice this, more work maybe needed

Also I explained my cheap chinese airbrush needle was bent when I inspected it. Just here's a pic of what I mean

wow gobsmacked - 15 years old, I never knew spiders could last that long. Clearly they had a good life with you, prob being fed well so wanted to hang about lol!

If they were in my house they'd be lucky if they lasted 15 minutes. But no, I had absolutely no idea a spider could live that long....that's longer than a dog, FFS!!

Rossgo.....here's a trick I've used for camo that might be worth a try.....maybe try it on a spare part & see what you think...
See, I always hate the way with camo patches - particularly on smaller leopard-print camo, the patches tend to "sit-up" above the rest of the paint.
If you work in reverse, you can paint everything with the "patch-colour", then use latex glue to create the patch shapes, let them dry, then spray the "undercoat" over the top. Then peel off the latex...the camo then sits "inside" the base colour.
Hopefully.

20+ years isn't uncommon for some of them.

May give that a try D - but to be honest I've not noticed any issues. I use an airbrush which does a good job of levelling the paint out and then a varnish layer which levels it out even more. Did a good job on the Spit to be honest

Jeez 20 years. Wow I am seriously shocked. I honestly thought 2 maybe 3 years tops then a spider would pass away - that's impressive

Oh that's right! I keep forgetting about your airbrush....tried one & couldn't get on with it....one of the reasons I tend to stick with armour rather than aircraft - rattle-cans & brushes are good enough for my limited patience.

I like airbrush to be honest can get very small lines with it

I tried my new airbrush out the other night. I need to learn how to use this one as it's not the same as my old Aztec. Its it very sensitive. Great bit of kit though jist need to learn more

Update on my model

I've used a scratch fluid. It was the first time I've ever used it.

I popped down different colours (black, rust and sandy yellow) in little areas so that when I scratch the surface these colours show through. My idea with these colours didn't work as well as I wanted it to I should of really painted full panels as then I would of defo got the effect I wanted. But live and learn!
