Brexit is going to cost tens of thousands of jobs at this rate.

Re: Brexit thread
It already has.
I saw a report today that there's roughly 45,000 au pairs in the UK, well over 98% are from the EU. They can't be used any more. Companies have been trying to fill places with UK and non EU people but no one is interested.

I never knew what an au pair was until now. I thought it was someone who did nails.

My parent's relied on au pairs to look after my sister & I when we were little.Kwacky wrote:It already has.

My father worked away (abroad for up to 10 months of the year) and my mum was a full time Nurse. Without the au pairs they got in either the NHS would have been one highly qualified nurse down or UK manufacturing's then global domination would have been failing more rapidly.

Re: Brexit thread
So a UK minister has written to the EU, complaining that we can't sell shellfish to the EU

Re: Brexit thread
The strangest part is about 'live shellfish being caught in waters from which EU cannot fish cannot be sold to the EU' as part of the trade agreement!Kwacky wrote:So a UK minister has written to the EU, complaining that we can't sell shellfish to the EU
Were the UK's negotiators pissed when they agreed to this?
There is no doubt Johnson was getting desperate as Xmas approached and agreed to things which, in the past, he had said he would not agree too.

Re: Brexit thread
JD Sports have said that Brexit has cost them "double digit millions so far". They're looking to move most of their distribution over to the EU.

What a surprise.
I wonder if any brexit backers are starting to realise it wasn't Vote Remain who were lying to them?

Re: Brexit thread
I do wonder if any of the people who abstained from voting regret that decision? It could have gone either way if the other 27.8% of eligible voters had been bothered to put a cross in a box.

Re: Brexit thread
A lot of remoaners didn't bother to vote, they were certain they would win. Even Farage was shocked when he heard the result.

Re: Brexit thread
Reading into this is depressing. There's a massive stamp duty earned on trades, so that's more money going missing. About 12,000 direct jobs lost to relocation, so there will be a knock on effect.

Re: Brexit thread
Where would this leave us on wages? If there's mass unemployment, an employer may be less inclined to offer pay rises. If someone complains too much they could let go and there'd be 100 qualified people waiting in line.
Are we potentially going to see wages go down?

Re: Brexit thread
Yep, that's one way to deal with it.
Lots of companies are already sacking people and putting them on brand new contracts. I don't know if you've seen any of the news about British Gas and the ongoing strikes? https://www.itv.com/news/2021-01-12/fre ... talks-fail" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
The government has already proposed to end the EU rules protecting worker rights, but that's been put on hold for now until they deal with the virus.
If, as expected, we follow the US model of employment then expect to see reduction in holidays, reduction in paternity and maternity leave, a change in the maximum hours rules and changes to provision of standard benefits (some are voluntary, others aren't).
The loss of trading business in London will have a massive impact. Financial services gave £132bn in 2019 to the British economy.

Re: Brexit thread
Is it too big a leap to suggest that Britain will become the largest workhouse ever seen?

Re: Brexit thread
Nope. I think that's the plan. There has been a lot of talk for a few years now about us being Europe's Singapore. Essentially you've got a top tier of the mega rich then the working classes and below them the very poor.
We've got very little in natural resources, hardly any industry to speak off and we've cut ties with the EU, so there's very little left to offer apart from our labour.
There was a report published this week which studied "trickle down" economics. It doesn't work. It's a myth.
