Some were and some were not. The one person that springs to mind who managed to leave the machine shop went fully behind the machine shop managers back to work with his future manager and the division director to force the move through - simply because he knew his request would get blocked.

All apprentices go through machine shop and a lot of the apprentices are really good machinists. He's not short on quality team members

Companies need people of all abilities to function ,not everybody can or wants to be a manager or MD or cleaner or labourer

I completely agree.

I do think that you won't be getting the best out of people if they're forced to stay in a job they clearly no longer want.

I agree but nobody is forced to stay in any job ,I stayed in a job for 5-7 years to long it took a lot of guts to move but I have never looked back since

Of course no one is forced but you know what I mean. I'm obviously not a manager and I know you are, I just feel like there has to be a happy medium in there somewhere to achieve top quality output from your team members but also retaining good workers.

A good safe working environment
Clear objectives that are stretchy but attainable
An all encompassing company bonus scheme with no cap
regular employee reviews
An open and honest line manager
free sandwiches and motorbike parking

People and staff management is a skill in itself.

I'm still on furlough for October. I'm working 4 days a week, with Monday's off.

Are you happy with that? Just wondering if its a blessing in disguise as I know you weren't happy in work or with your boss.

We've been told we are safe at work. But to make things a little safer everyone will spend 2 days working from home, so the population at work is further reduced. I don't get it to be honest. If I can work from home (which I can) why arent we doing it to avoid the risks of spreading the shit,

I just want job security at the moment. Furlough doesn't give me that.

A lot of companies are scared of their staff working from home, they are scared they lose control of you.

They think that productivity will drop and that there is a higher risk of internal company business being inadvertantly passed on.

I get this a lot in banking sector, for obvious reasons. But even they are now realising that staff have a moral compass and often achieve more at home.

Right, so a bit of an update.

I applied for a job internally, but wasn't considered for it (no idea why not). But they put me forward for another job as a junior assistant to someone who has been doing the job for 4 years. I made it clear at the start of the interview I wasn't interested but did the interview anyway as it was good practice for everyone.

I heard nothing from HR (at this point I didn't know I wasn't considered for the job I applied for)

A couple more chasers and still nothing, so I emailed one of the partners in HR. She insisted an email had been sent to me at the start of October. It hadn't. We can trace every single email ever received. It wasn't there. I asked for a copy, which she sent. It was addressed to Ryan. I've no idea who Ryan is.

Yesterday I get a message from someone in our department asking me if I'm looking forward to the swap. She's fit so I was hoping it was a wife swap thing arranged behind my back. She works for a partner who does EL/PL work (which is what I specialise in). She's not been getting on with him. So I'm going to swap with her for 3 months to see how it works out.

I know the partner, we've worked together in the past at a previous law firm. When he left the last law firm I took over some of his files so I know how he operates. He does the work I like doing and he likes to leave his assistants to just get on with the job rather than micro-manage them.

So I start a 3 month experiment at the start of December.
