Sounds like a load of crap to me. That's old advice about replacing a lid based on time. The modern materials are far different now.
Use is the biggest factor. I replace my commuting lid every couple of years. According to that article I don't have to. That's bullshit IMO.

Tbh Arai and Shoei still stipulate 7 years from date of manufacture or 5 years from first use, which ever comes first.

Re: 400,000 helmets in need of replacement?
I have already been asked for my opinion on this in a professional capacity, and my observation is that it is bady researched article and factually full of flaws,
Had they said that 400,000 helmets fit badly, then I would have had difficulty in dissagreeing, but you cannot make a cart blanche statement about bash hats as so many factors have to be taken into consideration.

It is better to arrive 30 seconds late in this world than 30 years early in the next

I only use mine at weekends and to be honest I believe it will last over 5 years. I only have a couple of years left until that time but think it will last 1-2 years longer. When I come to changing I will be going around and trying on loads as I wouldn't mind an Arai or Shoei want to see what my head can take!

So **** what. My bike already has big bright lights on. If you dint see that a silly colour helmet aint gonna help38 per cent opt for one finished in fashionable – but hard to spot – black, ahead of more visible options
