FAO Beermonster and Perkles (and other Brummies)

The British Oak is changing hands soon. The guy who owns the Prince of Wales is taking on the lease, he should be starting in March.

Hopefully he'll improve the place without it turning into a tossers paradise like the Prince.

He'll kill the place off if he starts charging the same prices.

On the plus side they will be doing good food there.

It's about £4.50 a pint for some of their beers. No one will pay that near us. They will all move to the Highbury, which has been done up.

I like the way you get different types of people in each of the bars at the Oak. They need to keep that going. The food will be improved and he'll tidy up the back smoking area. I imagine he'll throw in a pop up bar out the back which will help.

That garden is massive, there's loads of opportunity there.

There's also mention of a micro-brewery.

The prince got worse every year we were there and it was walking distance for us, so we used to try it every few weeks. Be interesting what he does.

He does need to be careful. If he pushes out the older crowd he'll end up with idiots from the Three Horseshoes coming in, then there will be trouble.

IMO he needs to be making it more for the families in the day with good food. In the evenings that garden is big enough for a band in the summer.

Interesting news. I too hope he keeps the character of the pub (which I think he will, as the Prince has kept its separate rooms) without pricing us B30 types out! I would imagine he will put the prices up slightly, but there's no way he'll be able to charge £4+ per pint and keep the locals.

I think the Wildcat Tap micropub should be (finally) opening later this year - next door to the P Cafe - so should be a bit of choice.

The micro pub has been talked about for some time.

It has, but talking to Brendan in the P the other day he says it's getting closer! There's been a bit of activity there recently so I think (hope!) it will soon become a reality!

I see Davenports are back and are opening a pub in Moseley under the Daresbeers brand. It's the old HSBC bank on the High Street.

Brummies of a certain age will remember Davenports.

Beer at home means Davenports! :D

A family friend used to work at the brewery on Bath Row (next to the old Accident Hospital). He always seemed to be able to liberate a few bottles, which made him very popular with my mum and dad! (groupdrink)

Work has started on the British Oak. I've no idea how long it's shut for or what they're doing. There's talk of a restaurant out the back.
