Has anyone fitted one of these?

I've lost the r/h bar end on the 748 and thought i might try one of these instead of replacing the bar end. I know they are silly money for what they are but its bike bling so obviously its value cannot be measured in £s.

Are there any down sides to them?

Looking at the CNC racing ones as used by Pramac Ducati in Motogp.

Sorry Duke personally I think they look stupid on road bikes and just don't see the point.

Yeah, I've got one on the ZX6R. I bought one to replace the damaged bar end when I dropped the bike (I swapped them over)

cant see the point of them for road use apart from bling, in a racing/track day context i can vouch for them, ive had too many near misses for me to justify fitting one, and can name people ive raced with that wouldnt of crashed if they had of had one fitted, the most recent being last weekend.

It's bling. You don't need a reason to fit it.

this is the video of a mate of mine racing TSGB anglesey last week, he took his lever guard off for some reason when working on his bike and never refitted it, his brake lever hit the left hand exit exhaust pipe of the guy he was chasing.

Tricky, they are supposed to help prevent hand injuries on crashing to aren't they? I might look at one for the track bike after seeing that, I need all the help I can get to stay upright

I always thought they were to stop the brake being activated by others than your self, and that was it. Would be interested to know if they have protection properties.

It's a bar end protector with a guard on it. It's supposed to protect the lever. I guess it could offer some hand protection. I've not thought of that.

Your right Frankie. They were brought in after the Gibernau / Caprossi crash were one of them accidentally activated the other riders front brake when they came together during a race start.

As far as I'm aware they are not designed to offer any protection to the hand or lever and are only fitted to the brake side on motogp race bikes.

you could hang your shopping off it on trips to the local shop too.

I had a mate who bought a £1000 carbon fibre Chris boardman race bike on the cycle to work scheme.

He was the biggest p1ss head ever and not into any form of exercise.

After a year of owning it I asked he had used it much. His reply was once to go to the off lience and hang 4 cans of Stella off it

I was sure I had heard or read somewhere that a secondary function was preventing finger injuries, especially pinkies, that why I asked Tricky about it, but after the replies I thought maybe I got it wrong.

So being an anal prick I had to check. Seems I wasn't going mad.

SAFETY
Just about everyone we talked to knows someone who has crashed due to their brake lever coming into contact with another rider. Our new hand guard line not only prevents inadvertant lever contact but also helps to protect your hands during a crash by keeping them out of harms way. We have a few friends whose pinky fingers have been "shortened" in a crash.

Not saying they are all designed with that purpose, but by default they do offer some protection. I have seen a number of bikes with them on both sides, but no idea if it's the norm on top level racing.

It's not a full on handguard but I suspect it reduces the chance of hand injury.

I'm keeping mine anyway, regardless of what you all say

I'm going to track some down for the trackie. I need all the protection/help I can get.

It looks good on the ZX6 Kwacky and it's functional, the fact you might never have the need for it on the road is moot, cause you just might.

Fwiw I have one.
Mine's an alloy bar insert that replaces the bar end weight that has a plastic L shaped protection bar protruding from it. The position of the protecting frame is adjustable for length & rake with small allen grub screws.
About £ 20 from fleabay (direct from PRC) they come as pairs for some reason. Whilst I thought that was a daft idea, I'm actually quite pleased as the bracket was ripped off when I went down at Snetterton earlier this year, and I used the other one to repair.
It's not bling, and being plastic you may consider it flimsy, but I pretty certain it will do to stop my brake lever being activated by another rider slowing down too much in front of me in a corner, & that's my only reason for having it.

I think the manufacturers will tell you they offer protection but what actual testing have they done ? Genuine question as I don't know

Personally I would see it as something that could snap and impact or pentrate my glove and do more harm than good.

They only use them on the brake side in racing and this is where they were developed to stop racing incidents with contact between riders accidentally activating the brakes nit to protect hands.

If people like them as bling thats fair enough but personally I'm not sold on them offering any protection buts that just my own opinion which could be a load of rubbish tbh.
