Those opening bars

Post by Kwacky »

At last a music poll I can agree with.

Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love has been voted the greatest guitar riff of all time by listeners of BBC Radio 2. The rock classic came out top from a list of 100 riffs drawn up by a panel of Radio 2 and 6 Music DJs, critics and record producers.

Music tastes are a very personal thing.

Personally i reckon at least half of that top ten have written better riffs somewhere else in their music career. :D

Im a huge Led Zepp fan - my favourite riff of thiers is probably Kashmir

Not sure if any of you have seen the vids, Jimmy Page, Jack White & The Edge talking about their most popular tracks and how they came up with them.

This is the kashmir one

I do like Jack White & The Edge's face when JP crack into Whole Lotta Love

I'm a big fan of Jack White. One of those who loves playing for the sake of it which comes across in his music.

Cheers, Kwacky.

I still think there are some very bizarre choices in there.

Whole Lotta Love over Black Dog?
Fools Gold before Waterfall?
How Soon is Now before What Difference Does it Make? Is 'How Soon is Now' even a riff?
No 'Street Spirit' by Radiohead but there is 'No Surprises'?
And whilst i understand 'Satisfaction' is instantly recognizable the Stones must have written 25+ better riffs.

Just my tuppence worth :)

Meh...they're good, but they're not a patch on Evil or 42 by the mighty *and equally defunct as most of those groups) Wise Blood! 8)

For signed bands I'd nominate the following in no particular order as my Top 10.

Black Sabbath by ermm....Black Sabbath - the Daddy and the riff that stoped me got me into rock
Hells Bells by AC/DC - another monster, and the Dandy Warhols did a surprisingly good cover of it.
Master of Puppets by Metallica - just frickin' awesome, especially watching Hetfield make it look so effortless whilst singing. The bastid.
The Czar by Mastodon - there's about 250 of them in this 4 part epic, I'll let you decide which one's best!
You Really Got Me by The Kinks - where distorted guitar first found it's voice
Breaking The Law by Judas Priest - cheesy as the Cheddar Gorge, but no less a riff for that
Heartbreaker by Led Zepplin - just because
Screamager by Therapy? - I can't deny the influence that Andy Cairns had on my guitar playing
Holiday in Camodia by Dead Kennedys - probably my favourite tune ever
Ace of Spades by Motorhead - apart from maybe this one!

I doube any of you will agree, but that's what makes music great. Other riffs that nearly made it include Teen Spirit, Touch Me I'm Sick and Dirty Boots, but I didn't want to be seen to be sucking up to Kwacky! :D

That song is just a single 8 minute masterclass in how to play heavy metal, I remember playing it for my A level music as I had to fill 20 minutes of constant music so that was a nice big chunk in one hit!
Remember: If in Doubt use Full Throttle, It may not make the situation any better, But it will end the suspense...
