Mixing oils

Post by Kwacky »

How bad is this?

I've got to take the bike to Mike's tomorrow. It's about 35 miles. I will be taking it easy.

The oil is low. I've got some cheap stuff I can use to top it up. i only needd about 0.5l Mike will be doing a full oil and filter change anyway so is there any harm in mixing the oils up for the short ride?

Any oil is better than no oil. If it's the same grade and just different brand I'd definitely not worry. Only concern would be if you had synthetic in there and dumping mineral on top.

Then he would end up with semi synthetic. ;)

Like Kiwi says, any oil is better than no oil. As long as it a bike oil it should not cause an issue.

Mixing full and semi is not good but apart from that it should not matter

It's fully synth. It's only a top up for a short journey so I'm sure It'll be fine.

Mike can put some of that lovely Motul in it for me when he does an oil change.

If its of the same grade / viscosity and bike specific you will be fine.

Another vote for any oil is better than too little oil. Only 35 miles is not going to do much harm anyway IMHO

I actually have some cheap supermarket oil, that I use to top up any vehicle just shortly before flushing the oil for an oil & filter change. Better than throwing away virtually new Magnatec or Power1
