spciy chicken and pasta. My wife cledarly thinks I have a massive appetite as there's enough here to feed the fleeing population of north iraq.

Homemade healthy chicken tikka masala - tasted a hundred times better than the muck you'd get from most takeaways around here

Couldn't agree more. Try finding an India curry house, very rare in the South as most are Bangladeshi. Nothing against Bangladeshi curries but the all seem to be made from the same gee laden gravy.

We went to a mates for "Indian" takeaway at the weekend and ordered 3 different chicken currys, they all tastes very similar and with similar heat yet the menu clearly had them as very different curries. I do find that the more accomplished cook you become at home the more you are let down when you have takeaways or go out for dinner.

We went to a very well reviewed local tapas restaurant last week and came to the conclusion that I could have cooked all the dishes better at home.

There are only a few meals which I think are worth eating out for and steak is top of that list. If you go to a good steak restaurant there is no way on you could cook it the same at home without investing heavily in new kitchen equipment (such as the wood fired oven they cook steaks in at Goodman Restaurant in London)

I'd be amazed if the the chief was actually Indian, I found about 2 in London in the 12 years I was there. They all taste the same because they're nearly all made with the same basic Gravy. The main dishes are just slight variations.

Try looking for a Keralan or Goan restaurant. Especially if you like fish.

Having roast beef with all the trimmings tonight. :P

Spudda you are spot on re curry houses - same thing a lot of the time and while I'll eat it I know I can do better. I've done some absolutely cracking curries using basic cooking common sense and the basis of a recipe. Problem is to do a good one it's an hour or two and it's best left till the next day - same as a chilli imoho.
