The world and more worryingly, the human race is getting close to the point of no return isn't it?

Water intensive crops are the biggest issue. People are trapped in houses they can't sell because they've got no water, but next door are avocado and almond farms.

It's a huge issue, especially in California.

In some states it's against the law to collect rainwater.

All that wealth and no infrastructure. I'm surprised they don't have solar powered desalination plants there. Win win.

Colorado is the only state that doesn't allow you to harvest rainwater.
There are, however, restrictions/guidelines regarding how that rainwater may be stored, the manner of collection, etc.
These vary on a state-by-state basis.

My only water supply at home is rainwater. I live too far up the mountain for town water. There isn't anything hard about collecting or storing it or plumbing it to the house for use.

I should imagine much of that depends on how much rainfall any given area receives.
Orange County averages around 14 inches of rain per year.... which to be fair doesn't exactly sound like much.
.... It doesn't really seem like we even get that much to be honest, but what do I know.

Why? I am only harvesting the rain that falls on my roof and would be going to storm water if I lived somewhere that had access to town water. What does it matter if I get 1 inch of rain a year or 1000?

So far this year we have had 1343mm (52.9 in)

Our yearly average is 746.7mm ( 29.3 in)

With the amount of water we receive via rainfall, it's not really worth bothering with trying to collect it... it's not worth the effort when we can & do already get it all from the Colorado River.

Well I disagree. Any effort to be self sustainable is worth it imo. the only thing that comes on to my property is power and of that I produce approx 40% of what I consume through solar. My sewage is treated on site and waters the tree section I have behind me. In an ideal world I'd like to have no demand on any public services and be totally self sufficient.

How's things out there, kiwi? Doesn't look good.

Bloody wet!! River is still at max height, even higher than the last two floods. But we are safe and dry 1800 ft up the mountain. Just can’t go anywhere.

Just checked now and looks like it’s starting to fall.
