Given the two bikes....whichever one pulls at the heartstrings...a bike is a very personal choice....it's like telling someone their favourite meal is wrong, there's just no accounting for taste...and I mean that in a good way, as Americans epitomize the very term "good taste".

Fast always equals rider not the bike IMO.

2 of the fastest riders I have seen on the road were on ducatis one was an ex hornet cup racer and just bought a brand new 996r he went past everyone doing a Troy Corsa special wheelie.

Regarding the bikes there's so much to choose from the ducati looks great given the choice between the two I think the 1299s would be the wiser choice. The more I see the R1 the more I like it would love to try one. The aprilia looks great too. Do you not want an inline 4 next time or are you keeping your options open.

Most of the very fast road riders I've come across tend to have the kiss of death about them. One of them hit an old couple who'd stopped in a dip to pick bilberries on the Leek road around the corner from Itches Leap. The other did managed about 100 feet (in the air) from the Sportsman over the post office and landing dead in the canal! RIP Willdy

Short list is currently Panigale or R1 although I do like the RSV4 and there getting cheaper too.

I still think the r1 is a bit odd looking and the aprillia reliabiltiy and dealer network would put me off,recently I think Ducati have got it all right at the moment ,beatiful looks awesome power ,loads of gizmos and good build quality

A Ducati will always have greater gravitas and kudos over a Jap bike.

If it were me I'd be going for the R1....the boutique bikes are great for learning about bikes, especially working on bikes vs. actually riding them...but my mates '05 Honda has never been touched...never crashed, rarely worked on, and still looks & runs like new.

Plus the R1 is a great ride...frickin' relentless acceleration!!

Yeah but think of the R1 as the average looking bird who gives the best blow jobs and it's not an easy choice. Looks aren't everything, just ask my wife

Well I bought the Lorenzo Rep Helmet so I guess I will have to be on a Ducati by 2017 latest

A 1299s will age gracefully and still be beautiful in 10 years time,the r1 will be forgotten by then and ugly with it

This would be the R1 on which every single one of the 2015 bikes have had to have a gearbox rebuild?

Recalls on new bikes is all too common these days.

2016 ZX10R has had a recall too.

Sooooo.....what's the general consensus on that?? I'm tending towards people getting more 'fickle'...everything has to be 'perfect'...opposed to the 'good old days' where you just accepted stuff as it was and made the best of it.

I don't think quality control/development has gone backwards.

Everything is just more complex these days.

I doubt many on here can remember the days of cars that used points and distributors which were a constant source of problems and the bikes of those days were even worse.

I think i read somewhere that the peak days of bike quality of finish and reliability was probably the late 1990s/ early 2000s but compared to todays bikes there were pretty simple really.

I remember points and distributors and I still remember how to set up static ignition timing with one!
