Cav's Racing Aspirations

Post by Cav »

The full Catalunya report has not yet been published, however, some videos have been released to the media and many suggestions of racing have been flooding in from the millions of fans.... (lol)

So anyway, some people have suggested I start racing. My mates even suggested whipping up the fund for the ACU license between them... I'd love to go racing and I think I'd do quite well, I'm level-headed, I don't push too far beyond my comfort-zone at anyone time (hence why I haven't crashed) and I systematically work through a track to learn it, then to better the suspension, then to better myself. The only downside is my bike's suspension is NOT up to the challenge.

The cost
In terms of the bike I need:
Fairing
Suspension front + rear
ECU Remap
Gearbox and Engine refresh (30,000 miles)

In terms of racing it's:
Race license
Entry fees
Tyres
Brakes
Fuel
Gazebo
CRASH COSTS!

Quite simply the figure builds up rather quickly...

...my question to all of you is, how am I supposed to rally these kinds of sums to start racing? It's never going to be cheap.

The full Catalunya report will be written soon :)

To put it bluntly, you can't. Not unless you want to give up on holidays and new clothes and nights out and all of the other stuff we do. Racing isn't cheap. I've seen loads of people take it up then dip out as the costs mount up. I've seen it cost people their friends and even their marriages.

But it's not all bad news. There's usually a good bunch of people involved and many enjoy the social side of it.

You have to know what you want from racing before you even start. You're never going to make any money from it unless you're exceptionally good. A mate of mine did a clean sweep one season in EMRA but he couldn't get any decent sponsorship for the following season, despite how quick he was.

I'd like to race at minimal cost to myself.. that'd be awesome if possible.

I'm saving for a house so I'd imagine my girlfriend wouldn't be happy with me blowing our £10k saved for a deposit on racing! :D

It wouldn't cost that much to do your ACU licence and just enter a few events as a wild card with what you've got now.

get a cb500 they run 2 grids of these at thundersport and Emra now run them too , loads of close racing ,cheap to buy ,fix and run .
they don't have the glamour or speed of the bigger bikes but the huge grids and cheap costs make it very popular .

Its something to consider.. I absolutely love the 600 though, having not ridden a 1000 on track I can't imagine anything better. It has a brilliant blend of power/handling

You may be right though, the CB500 might be something to consider

I've put a post on facebook and tagged those who have or do race, none of them seem to use the forum any more so they should see it on there.
