Books vs Digital

Post by kiwikrasher »

I like a good read, and with my regular work travel I'm getting through a fair few books these days, a couple a month is not unusual.

While shopping about for my next read "That Near Death Thing: Inside the Most Dangerous Race in the World" I found a digital copy on iTunes for half the cost of a paperback, but I just can't do it. I've read a couple of books on the ipad and it's just not the same experience, I just don't enjoy it.

The other consideration is I always read on the helicopter trips to make them pass easier, and you can't have anything but a paperback or magazine on you. Electronics and anything that could become a projectile in a crash are a no go.

So how about everyone else, digital or old school?

I partly agree with D6. I much preferto read a book. But the toilet paper qualities of the pages could be improved.

We grew up with physical books, we're bound to prefer them.
However, as times progress isn't it inevitable that we move onto digital everything?

Books all the way for me. The whole experience of book marking, seeing how far through the book I am, it's all part of it, as much as the reading of it. Might sound strange, but I suppose I have grown up with them as opposed to digital books.

Same with music, I love my sounds on the iPad and laptop, but I still like to have a cd on the shelf or as I do those big round plastic things ha ha, even a few old mix tapes still kicking around lol.

Mixed tapes!

I spent about 20 mins a few weeks back trying to explain a tape cassette to my 8 yr old son. He wrapped it up by saying 'things were so stupid in the olden days' |(

I read about 50/50 digital to physical books but to be honest, I prefer the physical copies. no need to worry with a physical book if it will transfer to your new device or not and there is something quite satisfying about a shelf filled with books.
I got quite into reading on my phone for a while and had a few hundred titled downloaded onto it and for convenience it was great and I read more than I ever have for about two years. I was pretty much reading whenever and wherever I was but when it came to needing a new phone I was unable to transfer the books so I stopped using the reader on it as much.

Digital media, conventional books if that makes any sense.

It does, I hadn't considered that aspect, I can't stand struggling with a newspaper!
