Re: Global warming
Did you watch Attenborough's programme last night?
The interesting point is that there is a tipping point at which we will not be able to reverse what we have done, as Nature takes on its own global warming at some point in the warming process.

Re: Global warming
I did. It's alarming that we've been talking about this seriously since the 1950s and still refuse to take it seriously.
Loss of polar ice will speed the process up.

Re: Global warming
I read somewhere that we're "due" another ice age in around 50,000 or 100,000 years...or whenever. At this stage it's estimated that that upcoming period has now been put on "hiatus" as-it-were partly due to man-made global warming.
We're a natural product of evolution....does it not follow that what we do as a species (whether good or not-so-good) is also a form of evolution??
It's like we're trying to un-invent something.

Re: Global warming
We've gone beyond being a natural species. If we were an animal the dominant species would have culled us years ago.

Re: Global warming
There's over 8 million species of animals that we know of, and a guesstimated 2 million more of which we're unaware of. Any number of species die out every year (pretty sure that number is in the thousands).
Despite what the eco-nazis say, life on Earth is still flourishing without regard for our selfish disrespect of it. So in effect, whatever it is that we're doing, it's working.

Utter rubbish, D41.
We are flourishing as a species but the World and the majority of the rest of its inhabitants are not.

I may have mentioned this before (ad infinitum), so you won't be surprised that I wholeheartedly agree that this is the singular most serious issue that our species must address.
Yet we are barely paying it lip service in real terms.
Many pressures contribute to the problems we are creating, and there are many potential resolutions for each. However..
The basic inherent problems always come down to our overpopulation.

Re: Global warming
I did see a quot earlier today:
An (admittedly) quite special church burns and its front page news and suddenly nearly a billion Euros is donated by wealthy people to rebuild it...
but
a rare type of turtle becomes almost extinct and it doesn't reach the front page.
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2019/ ... hinese-zoo" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
Its main habitat was the Yangtze River and other inland Chinese waterways, however, aquatic life in China’s rivers has dwindled after centuries of hunting and, more recently, decades of pollution, shipping traffic and ecological disruption by hydroelectric dams.

Re: Global warming
We in the western world have done a great deal to protect our environment , we shipped all the industry to the third world so we could exploit cheap labour and avoid all those nasty regulations that ate into our profit margins and simultaneously hand the problems over to people who have neither the funds or the will to fix them .

It's an improvement though, isn't it??
For a while there we shipped the Third World to the industry.....

Re: Global warming
I can't see us changing to be honest. We need to have a shock to the system and then maybe we will be willing to change.
But we all have food in our bellies, clothes on our backs and roofs over our heads. Tell me who will think about what Labour goes into all of that and say stop that to cut done on pollution and destroying our world. Not many people. And yet we all try to make ourselves feel better because we recycle that cereal box or plastic bottle that you had in your car or maybe driving around in that hybrid that we think will make that massive difference when there is a city in India with a hundred vehicles that barely move in traffic but all have their engines running so they can use their air cons.
Humans have a nature of destroying at our very hearts regardless of whether we believe that or not. We aren't those cavemen who lived off nature and lived in earth made shelters. We now farm meat to a massive scale and build to the far reaches of the sky and cram more and more people in to one area.

Re: Global warming
If air pollution, a reduction in life expectancy and massive increases in cancer cases isn't enough to make us change I don't know what is.

Re: Global warming
Personally i dont think.it is. Remeber nost people are still.living until 80s or so. And isn't all our pensions made to last until we are like 99 or something. To many people that's old!
Also look at the millions if not billions of people who smoke and drink regularly. We know alcohol is a serious no no and yet does it stop many people from downing a few pints each night. Does it stop people from lighting up their much needed fag each hour or couple of hours?
Personally this isn't enough. We have organisations out there who fight this and try to talk to us on the streets, what's the usual response from people ' don't have time mate' or 'maybe later bud'.
It's a sad situation to be in but we only care for our own lives not for the world. As long as they have food, heat and roofs that's all they care about. And again there's only a few people who care what's going on about all of those things as well.
We are destroying our world by just those 3 things. Eg farming meat - deforestation on a huge scale, clothes - factories in China pumping out a million and one pollutants from all their machinery, lightening/ heating, possible cafes inside that factory that have their 24/7 vending machines on all day and roofs digging up luscious land and filling it with concrete, using massive diggers and mulitple lorries in and out all day long, the workman who charge their battery powered tools up from our mains electric that the electric company is supplying from non-renewable sources and the wood we use for our roofs and furniture that has only come from deforestation .
This problem is huge and there's not a single government that will tackle it because it's far too big than any country out there. They speak a big game but literally haven't got a clue where to start.
It really bugs me because the world we have created has infact destroyed us all. And we need a huge shake, eg flood out 1/4 of the earth surface and I recogn even that wouldn't be enough in all honesty. We still need all of those things.

Re: Global warming
The only way is legislation and strong legislation at that.
Take plastics for instance. Legislation against plastic bags has made a huge difference to shopping bag habits. The differing (and often non recyclable) plastics on our foods and products. Ban them. Do it gradually, but do it over 5 years not over 30 or 50 when another government will change their mind.
If plastic is the only solution to some foodstuffs, set a standard that can only be used and can only be recycled.
The only issue is money and vested interests in government. in this country.
In most of the world they still dont seem to give a sh*t

Re: Global warming
Cancer rates in the west have gone up from 8% to 42% in 30 years. They expect them to be at 75% by 2030.
Diabetes is up 60% with 3.3m people in the UK suffering with it.
850,000 people in the UK have dementia. That's going up by 165% over the next 25 years
Our lifestyles are causing a lot of these issues, as is the environment we live in.
You mention smoking - we've got the 2nd lowest rate of smokers in Europe.
Drinking is on the decrease.

TLDR
We're all going to die and the people in charge don't give two sh!ts about anything other than their bank balance
