Just say No
To booze

It's all going to kill you, no matter how much or little you drink.
There's no way I'm going teetotal. Better to die early with a smile on my face than to have a long drawn out boring life.

Re: Just say No
I guess that for those of us who have been teetotal for over 30 years it is difficult to get our heads around wat the issue is, and I don't mean that in a judgemental way.
If drinking doesn't kill you something else will, and witj all the scaremongering going on, I am honestly surprised that any of us are still alive given just how many things are bad for us.
But as I am sure we have all been told at some stage, you can on;y guarantee three things in life.
Being born
Being taxed
Dying.....

I suspect me commuting at rush hour twice a day is the biggest risk to my life. If another vehicle doesn't take me out the pollution will.

Drinking responsibly and occasionally irresponsibly is never going to kill you, though I totally respect anyone’s decided to abstain.
Myself, I’m enjoying the f**k out of plenty of gin atm.

Re: Just say No
I only stopped drinking because of all the hours I spent in the mortuary over a 25 year period with the remains of victims who were dead becaue drink driving and it sort of put me off on top of which whenever I went out I was always the driver.
The other side of the coin was in my youth, 10 quid down the pub gave me a choice of spending 10 quid and peeing it up the wall or...... 10 quids worth of fuel and having a bloody good day out on the bike
Bit of a no brainer really after which I realised I could have a good time on soft drinks and I just never missed alcohol.
So I have absolutely no issue with people who drink (in moderation) Its those who become total pissheads and then drive or ride I have the problem with

Re: Just say No
stupidity behind the wheel or the handlebars can never be tolerated.
As for drinking I like it. I don't get wasted that often. I rarely drink at home. If I do it's usually just a bottle of beer or two.
At Christmas I do treat myself to a few bottles of top end wine. It's my Christmas present from me to me.

Re: Just say No
Nowt wrong with a drink or two as long as it’s to enjoy the drink, imho.
If I do drink more than usual these days, which only ever happens at Xmas or the occasional party, I pay for it big time now, not so much with headaches but with aches and pain in my joints especially my knees.

Fwiw I was of the same mindset as a yoof. Never seen any attraction in "getting blotto " .T.C. wrote:......The other side of the coin was in my youth, 10 quid down the pub gave me a choice of spending 10 quid and peeing it up the wall or...... 10 quids worth of fuel and having a bloody good day out on the bike
As has been pointed out above, life is simply procrastinating our inevitable demise. Something will get us all, one way or another.
Mitigating the risks is all well and good (eg.: I wouldn't bother taking up smoking), however playing it so safe that you simply exist rather than live would make it all rather pointless wouldn't it.?
Live in a sterile room, lying on an air cushion & on a drip feed of perfect nutrients to achieve 150 years.?
- vs -
Enjoying playing your risks, until one of them catches you out.?
I know which option appeals more to me.

Re: Just say No
Life can be fairly unpredictable, I’ve already lost 3 out of the 14 guys I was at school with, going teetotal for the health benefits whilst doing the bizarro hours and enjoying the pastimes I do is just plain ridiculous. That said I do eat sensibly and I only buy good booze.
Fwiw I listened to the Adrian Chiles interview, the one where he did a 100units + in a day, he said the only drink you properly enjoy is the first one (not sure about that tbh), but generally I do stop at one, it’s a large one but one all the same. Given my lifestyle, family history and present health issues, I doubt very much I’ll see 4 score, so a glass of wine or a G&T or two ain’t going to make one jots worth of difference to my life expectancy.
P.S. Currently enjoying a Martini.

Re: Just say No
I dont drink but i still say screw it. If you enjoy it then why not just do it! The amount of crap that goes around nowadays is stupid. At end of day we could all be hit by a bus, or could get 'shanked' in the middle of the street or trip and fall and break our own neck whilst rushing up some stairs. What's a bit of alcohol. I dont like the alchy type of people though who just get f'd and then start fights for no reason, jist a drain on our society but a few drinks to enjoy yourself or to be social etc where's the problem

Re: Just say No
Realistically Ross, what do you think the chances are that we will "all be hit by a bus"????
And more importantly, what are the chances of ME being hit by one??
I'm just trying to plan ahead is why I ask.

I don't think there's any buses that run 'round here. Not many, at least.......this is the OC. Buses are for the LA riff-raff.

Well it does happen maybe not buses but certainly cars. Infact a guy got hit just at beginning of week down a main road over here and the driver legged it. So crap does happen!D41 wrote:Realistically Ross, what do you think the chances are that we will "all be hit by a bus"????
