It seems what we should actually do; is to reward them with sweets when they are well behaved.

If it works I'm all for it.
We are just animals and most animals respond to training. Training young people in a similar way you would train a working dog is probably what most parents do anyway: good behaviour is rewarded, bad behaviour is punished.

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
They weren't handing out sweeties when I was there (34 yrs ago ) , I don't know if it still is but back then it was for people with "problems" and there was a large psychiatric element to the regime , I think it helped me somewhat I didn't have another encounter with the law for 15 yrs and haven't had another one since then .

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
Haha.. that did give me a chuckle; I think a lot of parents just get lucky that their kids have a good nature. Most parents I see have no idea how to get the most out of their kid, smacking them for being bored, laughing when the kid starts swearing, etc.. all of this stuff is minor, yes, but I bet these knobheads in moped gangs were brought up in a similar way. Good parents stand out but bad parents are the masses. So many parents completely ignore their kids too so of course they do what they can to get attention

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
No i want them to be taught pride, honor and some self respect. I want them to be a taught a trade that can be used in civvie life so they dont have to return to crime and give us the problem. The military services can teach them this, they wont have to go back to boring old school, they wont be stuck in a classroom all day, maybe these people have been given up on all their lives amd lile others hsve said do this sort of stuff for attention etc, maybe even a place to sleep (jail for the night). The military have that capability, yes it would be hard and they would find it difficult and prob want to quit but i bet many would say its saved their lives from commiting again when finishing their serviceKwacky wrote:Do you really want to teach our criminals how to shoot people?
Surely thats worth enough.
Again thid wouldnt be for murders or alike, they would have to go through shrinks to figure out if they would benefit etc.
And when we talk about shooting people, its a lot more restraint than that on a range, they follow orders they are drilled to an inch of their life before getting anywhere near ammunition, they may even find a career in the military. Remember its not just Army, we have the Royal Navy, RAF, Royal Marines and these guys arent all servicing as combat front line troops, theres ceremonial duties, theres public appearances, theres medics, builders, etc. Theres a whole infrastructure that keeps it going.
I bet many would say yes to it if given the choice, just give them the choice i say

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
Rossgo, I don't think you can get hold of kids who have been career criminals and turn them into model citizens with a few weeks basic training. I admire your optimism but it ain't going to work.
At present it costs on average £34,000 to put someone through basic training to become an infantryman. You need to add about £5k to make them a driver and the costs go up by another £20k for a specialism. So anywhere from £34k to £54k per person.
Then you need to add wages to that.
Our army has been massively slashed over the years. We could be left with just 60,000 soldiers in the next few of years. It was about 160,000 in the early 80s. It's all about saving money as far as the government is concerned.
Don't forget, we had national service before and that didn't stop people from being violent, or stealing, or committing other crimes.
People say "bring back national service" but what they forget is that it was a different time back then. People have changed, as they always do. We're in a different society now and national service won't change that.
P.S. Never ever tell an active serviceman on ceremonial duty or public service that's all he/she does

The selection criteria is already in place to cover this sort of thing and to get to the stage where you're handling weapons, you're already pretty far along in the training...it's not like you're issued an M-16 your first week.

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
I see where you are coming from and do see just how expensive it is, also see why criminals are getting out earlier and earlier due to being expensive to keep them inside and over crowding etc. But its an idea and without trying it people cant knock it. Whats the worst that will happen, the law is already crumbling around us anyway.
I defo dont mean that with the service men or women, they are heros, and in my opinion dont get enough respect. What im trying to say is regardless of Solider first, they also have their own attributes to the military service

How about a half way house?
Put them in prison but make them get up at 6am, do drill for an hour, breakfast, then clean the prison, then exercise, etc?
Make prison uncomfortable. Make them work to pay off their debts.

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
Fwiw one of the "best" soldiers I ever served alongside had never known his father. His mother was a lifelong addict & he was brought up being bounced from foster homes to care homes to borstals. At sixteen he enlisted in the Paras junior soldiers, and apparently barely scraped through training ( resentment of authority, presumably a legacy of those borstals).Kwacky wrote:Rossgo, I don't think you can get hold of kids who have been career criminals and turn them into model citizens with a few weeks basic training. Anyway by the end of his three year term he had morphed into a focused & regimented individual & he signed on for the next six. By the time we met, he was "a machine", more resilient, resourceful & assiduous than most of us could even conceive.
So, he was quite literally a superb soldier.
He was also, (as his parentage already indicated) an utter bastard. -Not his fault, I should point out, he simply was/is a psychopath. You could depend on him to cover your back 100%, -just so long as it served his interests. The army had taught him that looking after his colleagues was in his interests, and so he did. However he may have been closer than a brother to me, but he could never have been a "friend" because he didn't have the empathy necessary for that.
IMHO Kwacky had a valid point.: You can only be concerned, when his type demob.

chain them together in pink outfits and get them out fixing the roads ,litter picking and whatever else needs doing .Kwacky wrote:How about a half way house?

I think you have a very workable solution there .

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
They do that in some Arizona prisons...as well as "force" them to become vegetarians, & other fun stuff like that.
It's pretty funny when you think about it.
Hardened thug to prison newb..."Hey..you finished with that motherfcukin' tofu??"

This is also a very good idea. Service the community and make it into a better one. Its disgusting how many people dont look after our streets nowadays. Jeez thats hard hitting. Clearly a very good solider though. Did you ever find out how he coped when he left the army?!StMarks wrote:Fwiw one of the "best" soldiers I ever served alongside had never known his father. No idea mate. Furthermore I can assure you that I have no desire nor facility to enquire, after my own ignominious departure.

Re: London scooter thief jailed for 10 years
Run civilian prisons like military prisons, that will sort the feckers out. I know two blokes that did two weeks each in the NZ military prison while I was serving, and they came back very compliant.
Happiness is not a destination. It is a way of life.
