I do fancy something a little less mental than a sportsbike as an alternative and it has the added bonus of pillion comfort for taking the kids out on or grabbing a cheeky pub lunch in the country with the missus when the kids are at school.

Getting an SX was supposed to slow me down.

Except it hasn't got those big snouts! I never took to them, but yeah other than that, the styling is alarmingly similar (wasntme)

Prefer the exhaust on the Multi, the XR is very low slung and the angle looks sh1t but I guess I'm being fussy.

I hada Termi on the Multi so yeah it is hard to go better than that! But you'll pick up more luggage space the way BMW have done it as the RH pannier on the multi is reduced in size do to exhuast position.

Yeah I saw Dukes panniers on an IOM trip and remember one was dramtically smaller than the other.

Did you see the pic of the akrapovic exhaust I posted for the xr ? Can't find an on the bike pic but I reckon that would be a huge improvement looks wise and I wouldn't be surprised if it's an official BMW accessory.

Yeah I did, does look pretty sweet.
The S 1000 XR adventure sport is available in two colour options — Racing Red and Light White. Australian standard features include integral anti-lock braking, two riding modes, stability control, on-board computer, heated grips, hand protectors and centrestand.

Two packages highlight the available factory options:
The Dynamic Package with ABS Pro, traction control with riding mode pro, gearshift assist pro, cruise control and white LED indicators.
The Touring Package with electronic suspension adjustment, preparation for BMW navigation device, luggage grid and pannier holders.
A LED daytime riding light, low seat and suspension lowering kit are also available as individual options.

Pricing starts from $22,190, and the S 1000 XR will go on sale by July 2015.
Hopefully by the time I'm in a position to trade up there will be some kitted out used ones on the market! Been looking a bit and I can get a low km's late model Sprint GT for $10-12K fully kitted out, so that option is a bit hard to pass tbh, but I'll do some test riding when the time comes.

Tbh one of the main reasons to change exhausts these days is looks and noise as they rarely make much more power. The OEM exhaust on a lot of bikes are often full titanium these days and well designed to give good power.

I like the look of the red panniers, I have not seen a picture like that yet ha ha ha, also noticed the HP rear sets, and some other little bling items on it, including that lovely exhaust, even though the standard has a real growl to it that would look very nice.

Funny tonight I have taken the GS adventure home, my God, what a beast, it looks massive and bulky, like a Tonka toy (age related) but it is so swift and nimble I am amazed, yes it is my first time on it. Even to turn it around on a slope to put away in Fort Knox it is easy as pie..... I hope to get up early tomorrow and get a little detour in on the way to work. The thing flys I mean really goes, you feel like the king of the road on it ha ha ha, full spot lights on led day time lights..... It's like get out my way I am coming through ha ha ha ha ha ha.

After a second night on the GS Adventure (the big f?@! Off one lol, I have to say I am still an inline man, the water cooled boxer engine with shift assist is amazing, very smooth and easy to ride with pace and confidence, I love my bike and consequently the XR for using the same engine. So at present my loyalty is still there. :)

Cheers for the post Frankie. Tbh I would love a test ride on both. I test rode a GS years ago when they went from 1150 to 1200 so at least 10 years ago and have to say I was very impressed and the shaft drive has to be huge bonus when touring.

You would not really know it was shaft drive to be fair (GS) in comparison when riding the bike (my thoughts only) As for the boxer engine which is a decent bit of kit, they went from air cooled to liquid cooled in 2013 I believe and the engine much smoother because of it, there are a whole host of other engine mods, but that is the big one.

I managed to pinch the XR tonight, and took a little detour home, and yes I much prefer it, I suppose I would as it uses the same engine as the bike I own now. But yes I enjoyed my little blast.... dynamic Pro engine mode/map, makes it even more fun, looked liked my avatar except red ha ha ha ha ha ha
