Re: going electric
if we are going electric then we need a load more power stations to generate it , they aren't being built yet so I presume we still have a way to go before petrol is phased out .
Also with current charging technology many houses would need an upgrade to their supply if we were going to charge vehicles at home which would seem the most logical solution given current charging times .

Germany, i think, has vowed to stop making petrol cars before 2040.Rossgo wrote:Well dont think thats true mate! The world is pretty big lol!!duke63 wrote:If Germany doesn't make then then we won't have much choice.
What are other countries plans? UK and France cant change the world, we cant even deal with the illegals coming in through the euro tunnel

Company car tax rules planned will make anything other than an electric car, a non starter for most buyers in 2 years time.
To be honest as a commuting vehicle they will make loads of sense to the majority. How many people often do journeys of more than 20-30 miles each day?

Re: going electric
Merkel....."I cannot name an exact year yet,
but the approach is right because if we quickly invest in more charging infrastructure and technology for electric cars, a general changeover will be structurally possible".
.....That's from CNN last August, although she may well have said something else at another time. Either way, her cards are on the table.

Re: going electric
The UK is committed to ending the production of petrol and diesel cars by 2040. Europe will do the same.

....Brexit, £'s not €'s, etc. are strong indicators otherwise as far as the UK cares.

Re: going electric
As much as those who are pro-Brexit want to think we're walking away from Europe, we're not and we can't.
They're our neighbour. We can't ignore 26 countries.
No large car maker is going to risk the opportunity to get into the electric car market. Neither are they going to think it's a business sensible idea to stick to the petrol engine market.
I highly doubt the European and/or UK governments will have to do anything, car makers are already on the road to all electric.

Re: going electric
20 years is definitely feesable. Look how far they've progressed in ~10 years already.
Hybrids are just test beds/softeners for the public which most manufacturers sell now. Tesla have done a lot to kill the stigma of electric = boring, all the big names have to do is make something an icon (I'm looking at BMW/Mini drivers / iPhone users) and everyone else will follow - not that they have a choice.

Re: going electric
BMW's electric cars are very hi spec with the performance to match. I see a few of them on the roads.

Re: going electric
i'm wondering how items that are big power drains are going to be catered for - for example heated grips on bikes will have to go in favour of something much more economical like heavily insulated gloves with electric elements that don't impose too much of a load.
More importantly how do you heat cars?, look at this cold snap, the first snows caught peeps out and they got stuck in their cars, some all night.
I assume they ran their engines but if you were unlucky enough to have an electric car then i don't suppose you would have been able to keep warm for long.

Re: going electric
Electric cars could have a failsafe system in them which would prevent their use in extreme weather conditions. Plus self driving cars would cope better with the snow than a lot of car drivers can.

Re: going electric
Even the farty little electric cars like the Nissan Leaf come with 30kWh batteries now, and you'd only need a small percentage of that to keep a car safe over night. They also have battery heaters to protect the battery at minus numbers.sir thomas blanchard wrote:i'm wondering how items that are big power drains are going to be catered for - for example heated grips on bikes will have to go in favour of something much more economical like heavily insulated gloves with electric elements that don't impose too much of a load.

I wouldn't want to set off into the snowy night with a low battery though.

Re: going electric
The first Audi all electric vehicle that I posted about last week has a solar panel as a sunroof. It’s due out early next year.

Re: going electric
I also don’t see how getting stuck in the snow in an electric vehicle is any different to getting stuck in a diesel or petro car. I would guess that it’s easier just to heat the vehicle in an electric car without using the motor. In a combustion engine you would have to have the engine running to produce heat in the first place.
The only issue with electric cars is how to produce and store the electricity needed but I believe Tesla are already looking at producing your own free electricity at home.

Re: going electric
It will when it’s mass produced. Electric cars should be cheaper to produce than petrol/diesel once they can sell enough.
