Is this something a muppet like me can do or is it worth asking a mechanic to do it for me?

If you reckon I can do, any hints or tips?

It's a zx6r 2010. The current tank is damaged. I need to remove that. It's on the bike with fuel in it.

I've had my Daytona tank off so I suppose anyone can manage it! Haynes manual / youtube is almost certainly your friend here.

Drain the tank and leave the fill cap removed it's stops any pressure build up which can make removing the fuel hose difficult.

It's a very straight forward job just sometimes the fuel hoses can be a complete sod to get disconnected.

For what it's worth my zx6r tank was a doddle to remove but the Blade was a little awkward because of the fuel hose being a right c#nt to disconnect.

It's not hard Kwacky, all I'd say based my experience is (1) know if you're changing the fuel tank ahead of time (sounds like it) check with a Tech or owner of the same bike if you need a fuel pump seal or if it'll go again, (2) take lots of pics before you remove things or write a list of where wires/pipes go. It's that simple ime.

As blade says, drain the tank, but keep a container handy in case you didn't quite empty it.

I managed to get the RSV tank off with no dramas, so you should be fine.

Make sure you give the replacement tank a bit of a swill out before filling it. Mine was full of dust from being rubbed down and resprayed.

Quick thought, is it worth replacing the fuel filter while your at it?

Good advice from Nutz and whilst the tank is off I would make use of the improved access and replace the plugs and air filter.

Opieoils just did me 4 off iridium plugs for the zx10r for £30 and once fitted you won't need to even inspect them for another 16000 miles.

Personally I would stick a K&N air filter in. Not for any performance increase just as they can be cleaned and reused so makes them very cost effective as they are pretty cheap and often less than a cheap oem paper filter.

If your feeling brave you could inspect the valve clearances. Quite a simple job, it's replacing them if needed that's a little more involved.

dont worry its a piece of piss tips

no matter how much you drain the tank you will get petrol all over your self , the bike and the floor wear gloves and scruffs
when taking the tank off undo the front and pull it up. I usually prop the tank up using a large screwdriver so you don't have to hold the tank up while trying to get the breathers connections undone
The fuel pump seal will probably be rubber it will be fine to reuse just make sure its lined up right

You need 2 empty beer cans to support the load safely

And a lighter in case their is insufficient light.

I still remember the photo of someone on d600.org propping a fuel tank up with a beer

Looking forward to seeing your new tank all in Kwacky. I've managed to take off my CBR400 and Daytona tanks off. Never did the ZX6R though. I remember the other 2 being very easy no problems what so ever
