I would like Charles to step aside but he's been waiting a very long time to take the throne.

Kate and William seem to be very popular with the public. I think if there's going to be any changes to the way the monarchy is set up then that pair are more likely to get approval.

She's 95.... it's going to happen sooner rather than later, but she's definitely had a great inning.
Charles should take the throne if only to keep the institution intact, the "lineage" if you will.....his reign will not be a lengthy one. The younguns will have their day in due course.

When she does go it's time to sell the lot off to the "The Tussauds Group" and move on. There's no place for a hereditary monarchy in the 21st century.

No one would accept a new line to the throne now, so why accept an existing one?

Because there's nothing to accept....the House Of Windsor is already in place - "acceptance" doesn't come into it.

That's not the point he's making. What he's saying is if there was a open throne then it's unlikely the public would want to continue with the monarchy.

I understand that, but it's a purely hypothetical situation. If - and it's a big if.... IF there was no royal family, it'd be unlikely that one would be "installed" in this day & age. I get that.
But there is one, and they've been in place for generations, so it's not like it's just been started from scratch and imposed upon anyone.
Granted they may be something of an anachronism these days, but that's what makes them stand out, and one of the many things that makes the UK unique for the most part, from other countries - at least in The West.

It's not hypothetical, every time a monarch dies and is replaced the people have the choice to either accept or reject them. Eventually, in any democracy, that person will be rejected by a majority and the line will end. History is littered with them and it's only a matter of time. Maybe not this time, maybe the next time but they get more irrelevant with every generation.

Maybe not this time, maybe the next time but they get more irrelevant with every generation.

I'm not exactly sure what "this current generation" actually is, but I'm going to go out on a limb and assume you mean the younger generation...??

The first three polls that google just pulled up for me all indicate that support for the Royal Family still hovers over the 50% mark... although admittedly the figures have dropped a few points recently.
Only around a quarter of people polled...26% in this instance, want them gone completely. The people polled ranged in age between 15 & 49 years old.
Is that the generation you were going on about, or did I miss one?

I was curious about this comment, while I know was entirely flippant, how it stacked up in reality

But that ownership is a technicality.. commonwealth ownership of sovereign lands.

A quick referendum and a big chunk of that is gone. Australia last had a monarchy vs republic referendum in 1999. It was 5.2 mil for republic and 6.4 mil for monarchy. I reckon 22 yrs down the track that might be a bit different.

A recent poll also suggests increasing popular support for a republic. According to the YouGov poll, 62% of Australians said they wanted the head of state to be an Australian.

I should imagine the Crown Land goes with the crown itself (and whoever is wearing it).....it's not something that can be just sold off en masse, or parted-out as & when the sovereign gets the urge to do a little downsizing.
