How mad is this? Being able to create oxygen on another planet opens up so many possibilities.

Yup, we can trash and f**k up a whole new planet.

I wonder what the effects of releasing Carbon Monoxide is for Mars. Not only that, humans being there would also increase Co2 and I presume it will grow exponentially as more people go there, more frequently.

The technology is awesome though and I presume they'll take storage tanks so that Moxie can work while no astronauts are there, then they can tap into the store when they arrive.

The lasting effects for now, and for the foreseeable future, will be absolutely negligible.... they're not even worthy of consideration.
As for people... we're worrying about too many people going to a place that no one person has ever set foot on??
That bridge is so far over the horizon that to all intents & purposes it's an impossibility.

I strongly doubt that. I suspect there will be civilisation on Mars within 100 years. Space travel only started 54 years ago and there's been a huge void in space exploration for quite some time.

I suspect there will be a Space Village setup with doctors, surgeons, engineers, etc, etc within 50 years.

You can make as much oxygen or any kind of atmosphere as you like on Mars, but it won't stay there. Mars doesn't have a magnetosphere like earth and it all gets blown away by the solar wind.

We've barely managed to maintain a research station in Antarctica, which is considerably more local, less expensive, and slightly more oxygen-rich.

I'm not knocking what they're doing on Mars, it's incredible. We will have people there very soon. Space X has just won the contract with NASA to have a practise on the moon. Very exciting times.

I'm skeptical... it's taken 120 years of powered flight, a seemingly infinite amount of money & ingenuity, and so far all we've got is one radio-controlled 1/8 scale dirt buggy on an airless, lifeless planet.
And people are already talking about colonies??

The biggest problem is getting the stuff there. We've got the technology to live on another planet. We just need to get the people and the materials to where we want to be.

I think you'll find we have gained a whole lot more than that during our quest to reach the Outer limits ie:

Cat scans
Air purifiers
scratch resistant lenses
artificial limbs
smoke detectors
portable computers
LED's
Ice resistant airplanes
Memory foam
camera phones
freeze dried foods
baby feed
Improved tyre life
wireless headsets
insulation
shock absorbers for buildings
solar cells
shall I continue ?

I agree, but those are trickle-down by-products of our investment in space exploration... they're not going to take us any further in terms of space travel unless some major advancements are made at the higher end of the technology curve.

I think space travel is incredible and we should continue to fund it , I am working with one of our Agents on the Space x Programme

Exactly! I genuinely think you'd have to be delusional to believe that we are the only life.

Heck, they've already discovered new bacterias in space so of course there is life, we are filled with bacteria

For sure.....just look at all the.myriad different forms of life on this one planet alone and you have to figure that the odds are heavily stacked in favour of life existing elsewhere.
So much so I'd say it's practically a certainty that the universe is teeming with life.

I remember a scientist on the radio once asking the question, "why would you limit yourself to considering life on other planets having to look identical to life on Earth?".. basically, life may exist on the moon or on Mars, but maybe we don't recognise it just yet. We could have all the evidence we need already.

Watching a segment about the Atacama Desert in Chile....it seems that it's a deadringer for the Martian surface, and a great test-site for the Mars Rover.
Really interesting geography, Chile....I hadn't realized just how varied it is.
