Back to the gym today, arms and chest.

There's cleaning stuff everywhere and most people seem to be cleaning up after themselves.

I predict pain tomorrow, the biceps are already tightening up.

First time at the gym since March.

I've switched to a local Pure Gym. My old gym wasn't suitable for any form of distancing. Pure Gym have done a really good job to space out equipment and there's loads of cleaning stuff. It was good to see everyone cleaning after use.

I use Puregym and really good social distancing and cleaning facilities. They really have made a big effort and gym users seem to be acting sensibly so hopefully it stays open as it does seem to be working.

Track and trace is in place too as its logged who is in and out at every visit.

My gym only opened today so hopefully they can keep it going this way. I like the way you can see the numbers so I know when to go.

Legs tonight. I did a few squats, nothing heavy as my shoulder hurts doing back squats because of the arm position. A mix of cardio and machines as well.

My legs will be sore

My shoulder used to hurt doing back squats because of the position. Have you tried engaging your lats when setting up for the squat? That massively helped me as it would drop my shoulder and open up my movement.

It's pain caused by my arm/hand position. I get the same pain when I hold my arm and hand in that position without anything in my hand.

I did try a few variations. Front squats are out. I could do goblet squats but I'm worried I'll damage the shoulder getting the dumbbell into position.

If back squats are out you could try clean & press otherwise. Correct form gets those legs working but it'll be more of a low strain high rep situation.

Another good one which is low weight but REALLY FECKING HARD is the overhead squat. Barbell above your head with probably just a 20kg bar and squat deep. It works your back and all your fine motor muscles. It's crazy how hard it is but extremely beneficial for posture too I found.

Clean and press and overhead squats will be putting even more stress and pressure on my shoulder. There's a suspected tear in the front and I don't want to risk making that worse.

Mostly upper body stuff today and most of that was on cables. I think I'll stick to the cables until my shoulder gets better. I find them easier to control and it's not an issue if you let go like it is a barbell or dumbbell

I know that one. My biceps are killing me today. It shows how out of shape I am, I very rarely get DOMs in my biceps.

Kwacky. In response to my squat recommendations, my thinking is that it changes how the shoulder is engaged. It helped me out to try different things sometimes.

Thanks Cav, I've done some research and it's surprising how many people have sought advice about training with a bad shoulder. Looks like it's a common injury.

The back squats worked and didn't cause the shoulder to flare up. I'll only do them once a week for now and keep it fairly light (60kg). I'm almost 50 so I won't be chasing big weight numbers any more now. It's just about trying to stay fit and in shape. I have always enjoy time with the cables and they work for me with the shoulder injury so I'll probably do most of my upper body and torso work with them.

Once my shoulder gets better and I've improved my fitness a bit I'm going to start looking at doing classes (when they're allowed back). Being active and cardio fitness are probably key as you get older.

Are you in puregym now Kwacky? I got an email yesterday saying classes are back or coming back so should be an option soon.

I am.

My gym only opened this week so they're a bit behind schedule.

I'm not sure yet. HIIT/Circuits is probably the best place to get started.

My son's boxing gym does boxing based fitness training for the dads so I might look at that once I'm in better shape.

Barbell session. Back squats, bent over rows, overhead press (bar only), shrugs, stiff leg deadlifts and bicep curls.
