Cars slower than bicycles
By 2027 the DoT predicts that UK urban roads will be so congested that cars will travel slower than bicycles.
The Daily Telegraph leads with a prediction that cars will travel slower than bicycles on congested roads within a decade.
It comes from the Department for Transport, which says average speeds on A-roads in towns and cities dropped to just 18.4mph in 2017 - down from 19.3mph in 2014.
The Department for Transport says if this rate of decline continues, by 2027 cars will be travelling slower than 16 mph - the average speed of a male cyclist.

Re: Cars slower than bicycles
The world as a whole is getting too congested and difficult to live in it with that many people on it.
Maybe the world needs a third world war to kill off half of the world population anyway to open up some space again for a peaceful life to become a possibility on this planet.

Didn't exactly work out that well the last time, did it..?
Although I suppose in an abstract sort of way it did.

Re: Cars slower than bicycles
In central London at rush hour walking can be faster than a car, and often running is one of the fastest options.
Cycling is obviously much faster and getting much more popular. Both companies have offered secure storage for bikes, and there where 30+ bikes at each company.
I recon the cars days in cities are very numbered.

I don't know why so many people insist on using their cars all the time.

Re: Cars slower than bicycles
I dunno if they do cos at rush hour trains and buses seem to be all jam packed too. UK is not that bad, if you go to places like Istanbul or Tehran the problem with traffic jams is much greater than London.Kwacky wrote:I don't know why so many people insist on using their cars all the time.

Well, WW2 ended up with nuclear weapons being used, and that finished things pretty quickly.Fireball wrote:This time arround a world war is likely to become a nuclear one which will be far more devastating to lives across the whole world.D41 wrote:'Lebensraum', eh??

Re: Cars slower than bicycles
To cycle to my gym takes 18 minutes taking the scenic route.
Driving to the gym takes at least 15 minutes.
1 burns 600kcals
1 burns £££
I don't live in a congested area particularly so I'm not surprised by this bit of news in the slightest

Re: Cars slower than bicycles
Talking of wars, that was the old way of keeping us all in check with our population! Oir new way should now probably be more education, free contraceptives and also a chinese type law - 1 kid per family or if you want more have to prove that you can afford them. Far too many families now who have 5 plus kids and no jobs!
As for the road well we need more investment in them and more thought. Got road works going on on the m4 for the past year and literally nothing has changed!
