Due to the fact we have personnel offshore from all over the world we now have a new mobilisation procedure. We have to complete a self health evaluation in the week before we go and email it to the medical officer and then will be subject to temperature screening at Darwin.

We had our first death in Aussie last night, 78 yr old. It’s leading news, yet last year in Aussie over 200,000 people had influenza and over 400 died. Barely heard about it.

I've heard that advice to the Government from within the NHS is that this has the potential to be as bad as the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918.

They still don't fully understand that one which is why I think we might be seeing some quite strong restrictions on travel soon.

These are very different times but Spanish flu deaths were not restricted to the old and ill.

The NHS has the risk as low to moderate and all the evidence I've seen is that the people who do pass away had a pre existing condition or were elderly.

As you say....very different times. Much of the world was at war, and the virus was spread by young men crowded together within the confines of military service.
I think initially the ball was set rolling in Spain....not necessarily because it was more prevalent in Spain but simply because they were a neutral nation and more forthcoming about what was occurring within their borders...whereas the countries involved in the war played their cards close to their wheezing chests so as not to let the opposition know their plight.
Or something along those lines.

All I see is statistics from other countries that say it's the old and vulnerable and it's a low percentage of deaths.

This will be a pandemic IMO, but so is other flu or the common cold.

The media is hyping this up and it is utterly damaging to economic progress and will ultimately cost jobs and costs for everyone.

A total of 3000 people dead from Coronavirus globally.

More people die in road accidents every day.

An NHS intensive care doctor was saying it's 10 times more contagious and 50 times more deadly than common flu. So if it does get to the same scale as common flu it would be much worse.

He also said that we don't have anywhere near enough isolation units in the UK and no vaccine for NHS staff treating them.

It’s the unknown that scares the Governments.

They have no idea how contagious it is, how deadly it is and what the consequences might be.

And they have no vaccine to prevent it spreading.

It’s their worst nightmare.

The big problem isn’t really the deaths etc. But the business continuity for everyone. If it does get to pandemic levels, and big percentages of population are infected (and it is very contagious), then a lot of staff will be absent from NHS, Fire, Police etc, not to mention other critical functions like lorry drivers, shops, fuel industry workers.

Spot on.

The Govt won't give a **** about people dying (in fact they will probably be happy to clearing a few million people off the monthly pension liability) but they will be bothered if their economic plan for the next five years is blown out of the water by a simple virus.
