They'll be conflicted when they find out it was a gift from Blair.

Apparently there's two identical busts. The bust in The White House has been there since the sixties. Blair loaned the other one to Bush to display while the "usual" bust was being restored.
Or something along those lines.

Why are they being told to effectively stand down just before the Capital was stormed?

Why weren't they allowed to wear protective equipment? Or not allowed to use riot gear or employ riot tactics? Or not allowed to gather any intelligence?

No searches
No arrests
Not allowed to ask for help

Then compare that to what they were told to do in response to the death of George Floyd.

The National Guard doesn't have search & seizure authority... at least I don't think that they do. Same with the power to arrest.
I'm also pretty sure that when they operate in a civil disobedience capacity they operate independently of other units...DCNG is tasked with the DC area...NYNG is tasked with New York - or held in reserve should the need arise in New York, etc.
I mean, these guys are the equivalent of the Territorial Army... they're part-timers being used in a policing role, which is not really their forte.

I'm not sure if you're just responding without reading what's in the letter and my reply to Jack, or you're just guessing.

I'll go for the latter,

So if what you say is true, why did they have powers of arrest, were able to use personal protection equipment, gather intelligence, deploy helicopters, respond to request for assistance without having to gain authority from the Secretary of State, use rubber bullets, carry arms etc for every other DC protest?

This all adds weight to the accusations that the whole thing was planned from high up.

If you're bored, read up on the Kent State University protests to see what the National Guard have got up in the past.

For the record, the National Guard has the same powers as the local police, which is why they're called in on a regular basis, especially to help with riots.

I can't see that being real , as I said the NG did all the things that letter says they are not authorised to do, there would have been some sort of fallout from a mass refusal to follow orders like that .

During the Capitol riots?

Are you sure that was the National Guard?

With that in mind, the D.C. request last week largely limited the Guard to traffic control. They were not authorized to perform law enforcement duties.

Three days before supporters of President Donald Trump rioted at the Capitol, the Pentagon asked the U.S Capitol Police if it needed National Guard manpower, but the offer was declined, according to senior defense officials and two people familiar with the matter.

Nope.... you're right - they do indeed have arrest powers...I thought they were simply allowed to detain. Go figure.
But that's probably where the similarities end, I should imagine.

No I'm not sure at all . I could easily be wrong .
On a related note though why would the NG be mobilised in such a way over what amounted to a few hours of rioting when the riots in Portland seemingly went on for weeks on end with no NG mobilisation ?

Dunno. I'm just comparing what happened with the DC national guard and how they had orders from very high up before a big event. Trump is being prosecuted so I thought I would flag it up. The national guard in DC were being told what to do a few days before the event.

The protests started in Portland on 28th May. The national guard was first called up on 1st June.

He's escaped a trial.

The vote was 57-43 in favour. They needed 67 votes in favour.
