LOL, don't be sorry for that mate. I was a little inspired by Cat3's ongoing thread on TDR ( if you know the one I mean.? )
Appreciate the idea though. No sorry, not seen that thread. Don't venture over there much any more.

I'd say bin the café racer idea (because I personally hate the look) and build a hi spec street bike or a more modern necked. Custom frame and bolt together some decent spec second hand bits that you can spend some time polishing and tarting up. Plenty of time can go into frame and geometry research and you can have your own bike built from the ground up. The big expense would be the custom frame but you could go down the route of a couple of donor bikes for bits and break what you don't need.

Along these lines: http://www.giaengineering.co.uk/custom- ... builds.php

Only sorry I was so far off message mate. Be interesting to see what you choose, if you decide to take something on. :)

I think about this a lot , it's one of my future jobs. I can't help thinking that I'm so bored of seeing Honda 500s etc being tarted up and messed about with. Now and again something gets created that is nicely done with some real engineering, but without lots of time and skill it's probably beyond most people to do.

I think if I was to pick, right now, and have to go out and buy one - I'd pick a moto guzzi. It's a little different. Unusual even. And it still retains a touch of individuality.

I don't mean to offend anyone currently tinkering with a bike like I mentioned....... It's just my opinion........

As you say though! Everyone is at it. Junk is really expensive now!

Best Bikes to turn into cafe racers are v-twins, boxer twins, parallel twins and triples, IMHO .

So anything that hasn't got 4 cylinders basically (giggle)

Yep. I don't think they translate well to cafe racers.

Doing this properly is never going to be cheap though. I reckon you would need to budget £3-4k as a minimum if you want something decent and worth riding.

Fwiw I always felt that the CX500 would make a good project base, & I would expect they are cheap.?
