Slipper Clutch Install

Just finished fitting the new Sigma Performance Slipper Clutch.

All went well except the locknut locking washer was a real pita to unseat but I eventually got it free and all went well from then onwards.

The slipper clutch is designed for both the Honda SP1 & SP2 but the two OEM clutches differ with the SP2 having a judder spring and seat when the SP1 does not. When assembling the pack I moved the judder spring and seat out one plate as advised by Neil Spalding other wise they can become trapped when the ramp opens up.

The friction discs all measured 3.8 mm which is within the service limit of 3.5 mm but the assembled clearance between the pack and the clutch cover is a little bit out. Clearance measure's 1.25 mm when the manual says 1.0 mm for IL4's and 1.5 mm for Ducati's and other big Japanese V-Twins. I will give Neil a call after lunch and see what he recommends.

Some pics of the installation.

Blimey, that didn't take long....

So are you going to test it ?? I'm not sure that I could intentionally bang the bike down a gear or two to try and lock the rear up ..

Took about an hour to install Jon its very straight forward.

Will test at the weekend hopefully. Just spoke with Neil Spalding and going to order some new springs as current ones are 50% worn. Changing friction plates for new ones won't open up the clearance as I measured them and checked the manual whilst eating lunch and there within tolerance for brand new plates. Neil said it would be fine to run as is but if I wanted to adjust the clearance I would need to find a different sized thickness clutch plate. Apparently rc8's and hayabusa's have the same plate stamping so just need to find which has a different thickness and install that.

I think I will run for a 1000 miles then check the clearance again to ensure all is well.

Sounds complicated to me.

Sounds relatively easy. It's one of the the few things I've not done on a bike. Do you have any install instructions you could email me fella? I'm interested to see how easy :)

I'm not jealous either (giggle)

Emailed a copy over mate (y)

Found a Suzuki Hayabusa plate which is 0.3 mm thicker so going to order one to adjust the clearance.

Also ordered some new Honda OEM springs to improve preload on the clutch plate and have also ordered an SP1 inner friction plate so I can dump the SP2 judder spring assembly.

I replaced the clutch on my 748 after it got destroyed when i fell off.

It was with some trepidation i rebuilt it myself but aside from getting the big nut off to replace the basket it was easy.

A slipper clutch for it is on the agenda for next winter hopefully.

Had to use the missus lecreuset cooking pan type thingy to soak the clutch plates.

What she doesn't know won't hurt her. Just better not request shepherds pie for a while as it might have an after taste of castrol fully synthetic (facepalm)
