Careful with high mileage s1000rr. I read a buyers guide saying its common they have engine issues around 20k, although I cant remember what the issues reported were.

Are you sure that's just not the 18k service? Valve clearances, and they're a bit pricy. It's the next service on the XR.

Oh and 20k high mileage for a BMW engine, what a load of old pony. There are XR's on the Facebook group will in excess of 50k, some 80k, and it's basically the same engine

It was a buyers guide in one of the magazines. Probably fast bikes from memory. I cant recall the detail but remember being surprised when I read it, as like you say you wouldnt have expected it.

I could write something equally silly back but what's the point. Simply trying to offer some helpful advice if Perkles wanted to look into it, not sure why that has to be seen as negative.

I cant remember the problem so rather than guess, I thought it useful to point out there was some report of issues in a buyers guide and then Perkles could research it if he wanted too.

Why don't you come back with some facts when you can useful contribute to the discussion rather than throw about hearsay.

Jon I havent got a problem with you and there is no need to be so hostile.

You made a dick comment a while back and I called you out for it and I've moved on. It wasnt personal from me then or now. You just made a nasty comment to me and I pointed it out.

Absolutely no need to be so hostile, your only showing yourself up. I've said nothing wrong and have nothing to defend or explain, I was offering some information in a discussion.

I’ve joined the s1000rr owners forum to do some research
I am not sure if I will buy a brand new model or go with a 10k gen 3

The problems with S1000RR reliability are fairly simple.

2010-2011 (Gen 1) machines have a valve issue.
2010-2016 (Gens 1 & 2) machines have gearbox issues where you just need to get them checked out. I can get more details from my friend if necessary.

That's about it.

They're incredibly capable machines and apparently the step up to the Gen 3 is much more noticeable than going from Gen 1 to Gen 2. More road bike than anyone needs but I understand why they sell so well!

I think i would be very wary of buying a brand new sportsbike now, ebay is full of 1000cc sportsbikes, many nearly new ( like the above). The depreciation hit in that first year is massive and i hear many say how insurances costs are getting very high.

Its a very very small market these days.

Nice. If you can stretch to an approved used I would really recommend it. The dealer backup is amazing as the really looked after me when my bike broke down.

No, I screwed up there. I've got the insurance with bmw, but the dealer hinted when I picked the bike up that they might have been able to get me a better price. TBH, BMW had the best price for me bike a long shot anyway.

Insurance cost may be my limiting and deciding factor . I am starting from scratch again and have zero no claims bonus due to being a company car driver

I was an issue for me too. Insurance companies don't seem to like 25k a year...

I would try giving BMW a call though, I'm sure they do deals for BMW owners. Worth mentioning the company car as well, some insurers will take it into consideration.

Some insurers will mirror the company car ncb.

Just looked at the links from Duke and Kwacky.

That's a hell of alot of motorcycle for the money

Not sure when they changed the warranty from 2 to 3 years, but if your buying nearly new new you might get a couple of years warranty for free
