I got chatting to a biker the other day at Monsal head and he was bragging about how little tax he paid from working overseas. He was a little shocked when I suggested he **** off and rides on some roads he'd paid for.
Tell me you didn't really do that!!!?? That's hilarious. (rolf)

Therein is the problem. It’s seen as acceptable to beat the tax system but not to beat the benefits system.

Where is the difference? The big loser either way ultimately is the UK Treasury.

I know a few guys who work overseas and they say their tax free, but there not their actually employed and tax paid by their employing company. I.e the company pays their tax for them, so they take home Gross pay. It's some kind of perk or incentive to work overseas.

Big difference between tax avoidance and tax evasion. Having an ISA savings account is tax avoidance.

You read that dribble?!

No, but i have dipped into one or two occasionally and some of the crap they make up in that rag is being repeated in this thread thats for sure.
Image me too. I don't really read the paper to be fair. It's full of maybes, possibly, could be etc etc. Just full of dribble which isn't fact. Which I've read some of the posts in that brexit thread and seen a bit of that as well so ignore most of it as it's not telling me enough!

I don't believe people are repeating things from papers. Unless people have a shelter life then maybe they wouldn't believe it. But not my problem what people believe. I know what its like. Not from papers or news but from seeing it myself

As I pointed out earlier, both are very wrong imho & should be addressed for the sake of those of us who contribute our fair share.

The difference is in the accountant's integrity & knowledge. (smirk)

The difference is even more clear cut than that - one is legal, one is illegal.

....ish.

Or.........one is allowed and encouraged by the Govt, the other isn't .

The result to the Treasury is the same.

Well then, if it's encouraged by the gov't...

You could argue that even tax evasion is encouraged by the Govt (for the wealthy few) when many of the offshore tax havens are Crown dependencies.

StMarks, much of the big corporate tax avoidance/evasion is more to do with lawyers/accountants interpreting the tax laws in their own way and then tempting HMRC to challenge it in the courts. I fully appreciate there are many in my profession who don't play by the rules but that isn't what my job is about and it's not something I condone.

You know I was only ribbing you mate. ;)
Fwiw I was told that many of the those employed by HMRC to set & improve the rules, to close loopholes etc, then leave to become consultants for those very conglomerates who so effectively dodge their contributions.
Bit like poachers turned gamekeepers, but in reverse.?

Crown Dependencies are not part of the UK...the Isle Of Man is the only one that falls within the EU VAT zone/area/whatever-it's-called.
Either way, the laws pertaining to them re: taxes are slightly different to mainland UK.
