Anyone tried it or used to do it?

I've not got a bucketlist but it's something I've never done. I wouldn't mind having a go. It must be seeing so many horses last night on my country blat home that's triggered my interest.

Back in NZ when I was a teen my best mate lives rurally and his mum had 3-4 horses. We used to regularly do 3-4 hour cross country treks. I loved it, but being young we did tend to thrash them a bit, one was an ex race horse and would run till he dropped if you let him. We were always getting in trouble for bringing them back exhausted.

As an adult I’ve taken the kids to a horse trekking place near us. Kids love it and it’s the most settled I’ve seen Byron ever.

Give it ago, you might surprise yourself. If you have an affinity for animals and like being outside and enjoying scenery you’ll love it.

you want a western saddle , not an english saddle , I enjoy horse riding done it a few times , went up Mt Teide in Tenerife on horseback was a great day with wonderful views and scenery , guide was saying they filmed some spaghetti westerns up there and I could well believe it .

Did it on a ranch in the outback of Australia and hated it. Bumpy, uncomfortable, on big ugly animals. Next day I spent on motocross bikes tazzing around the huge ranch instead.

I'm an ex horse woman from a dot to mid 30's ... had a couple of old rescue hacks .

Try your local riding school for a lesson and see how it goes.

It isn't as easy as I looks and remember there is a real amount of HP beneath you that has a mind of its own !!

I would never go back to owning them again but sometimes miss the feeling of being at one with a beautiful soul .. I wouldn't do it now as too much traffic and not enough hacking fields to get a good gallop going

Once or twice....up in the San Gabriel mountains north of San Dimas.
It's not for me. There's no workout on the climbs & then fun descents like on an MTB. There's no workout from hiking, etc....you just sit there like a doofus. And they smell.

I'm sure it was called a ranch. Can't say I took much notice. It was the wife that wanted to do it, and was miles out of our way (we were travelling on greyhound coaches). It was setup for backpackers, and had quite a few doing it.

StM is the boy to ask iirc (as well as bb41!), nags are not my bag baby, but I’m fairly sure he’s a regular horse rider.

Yep, I've got a horse. I called her Bunny, because she was born on Easter Day from a mare that Deany owned.
That mare (her mother) has died now, so we only have Bunny.
I raised her, broke her to ride at around two, and she has a very leisurely life since as Deany isn't confident riding out on her own & owning just the one means we can't ride together.
Like D6 I do find two wheels easier, but it's almost like comparing Chess to Football.
IMHO riding a Motorbike is simply you challenging yourself & pitching your skill against a chosen environment.
Riding a horse is includes those same challenges. However with considerably more physical input & the added element of syncing with, & mastering, another mind at the same time.
I believe it also is an even more dangerous activity than motorcycling.?
I have also heard that the Western Saddles that Jack mentioned are meant to be far more comfortable, but as I've never tried one in all my years riding I wouldn't know myself. Never even seen anyone using one that I can recall.?
Do NOT buy a horse. They are one of the most efficient ways to use all your time & turn all your money into shiiii,,, manure.

I might give it a go in the summer, just to see what it's like. I can't see me taking it up as a hobby though.
