How many of us are superstitious? My wife is, it drives me mad.

My mother was terrible when i was growing up. You name it she had a superstition for it.

Wierdest one? You cant cut your toenails on a Friday. FFS.

I think about them (ladders etc) when i'm in those situations because of my mother, but its very silly.

It's Sunday in my house where toenail cutting is bad luck.

Stray eyelashes are used for making wishes.

Eggshells are broken

Magpies are greeted

I get the ladders one from a safety point of view and it was probably mothers telling their children to get out from under them that escalated into superstition.

As for the others, they used to affect me as a kid so now I ignore them. I'll walk on all the cracks in the pavement !!

Not really. I'm more ritualistic than spiritualistic.....and a lot of those old sayings seem to have some religious undertones or origins.

Walking over 3 drains was considered bad luck when I was at school.

It doesn't bother me now but it still rings a bell every time I see 3.

My Mum, Dad and sibs weren't superstitious, but my Nan was, from what I recall she had some really weird ones, the oddest of which was putting all the knives away in a drawer and opening all the doors when there was a thunderstorm.

Her explanations were that the sharp edge of a knife would attract lightning, hence putting them away, and opening the doors was so if ball lightning got into the house it could get back out again. I thought all this was hilarious as a kid, but I've seen her hiding under the stairs in the middle of a storm, absolutely terrified, while I was excited and watching for the lightning.

It's not as though she was a timid person, she was a bruiser in her younger days, gutting fish in a gang and still had hands like a navvy at 90+, she survived being shot at during an air raid and a house almost collapsing with her and her kids in it when they were bombed in another air raid, they climbed out of the broken windows as the doors were jammed shut, I asked my Mum if it had been the experiences in the war that had left her like that, but Mum said she'd always been like that, even before 1939, so I guess they were a tough breed but with some odd ideas that manifested as superstitions.

I don’t really have any superstitions, just weird OCD habits. I’m not going to even start explaining them because you all think I’m weird enough as it is

Having said above that I’m not superstitious, there are a couple that I’ve had my memory jogged over, although I’m not sure if they’re superstition or accepted custom?

They both involve gifts, if I should give or receive a knife it should always be accompanied by a small amount of money - so the knife doesn’t cut the friendship.
The other one is purses and wallets, they should always be given with money inside - so they should never be empty.

Both a bit daft I know, but both are follow ons from my childhood from my parents.

Another one I do is volume- it has got to land on an even number especially when I'm driving - bad luck if its on an odd number!

My Dad would always do the "First Foot" thing on New Year's Eve/Day for good luck.

He also had a pretty cool ghost story....which, if you knew my Dad, was the exact opposite of him to come out with.

I do this with the cruise control, there’s a couple of sweet spots where the mph and the kph are both at even numbers. I think we’re all a little bit OCD somewhere.

Fecking nightmares

My kids are already trained to remove all rubbish from the car when they get out. If they forget I just wait by the car and they eventually come back to ask why I haven’t unlocked the house, and I just nod towards the car and they know what needs doing
