You had me at "rations". That doesn't suggest a country that is in a good position....at last not to me. Rationing is usually for dire situations...it shouldn't be "the norm".

12 years ago. I know for a fact that the shop I used to work for never gave food away. If it was out of date I was told, put it in the skip (big compressor type). I even knew them to scrap a whole load of French sticks that was baked during the early morning because it didn't swell to the specified width....I couldn't believe it when i say trays and trays just being thrown away. I dont know about now, it maybe different.


It's not the food that goes off, it's the people's issues with these best before dates or their idea of what it should look like that raises scrap. We all know if the date is saying yesterday's date, we would all still eat it, or if a carrot came out of the ground rrally misshaped we still know that it would taste like a carrot, because it is still a carrot.

It pisses me right off

Well....you have to have some kind of guidelines/regulations in place, correct?? Especially where it concerns health, surely??

You say you're fine with yesterday's date on food you buy, but no-one would buy yesterday's Big Mac, would they??

Or yesterday's Quarter-Pounder..?

Do a google on McDonalds food and it's incredibly slow rate of decomposition.

Oh yeah....they last for years!! I found a Mickey D's French frie under my car seat once that was probably pre-WW2. Still ate it, though. Delicious.

Let's say a packet of crisps has a one year date on it. They are just guaranteeing that 1 year as it will stay fresh but I would guess a month afterwards it would still be absolutely fine to eat. So why cant that go to a homeless shelter? You talk about a big Mac but we have homeless people eating from bins so my guess is, if you have it boxed up still in a sellable state a homeless shelter would welcome the food

My mate used to be a hotel manager.

When they changed the beds they wanted to give them to a homeless shelter but the shelter wouldn't accept them as they were used items.

Strange as they were also used items the night before when people were paying £200 a night to sleep in them.

World's gone mad.

It's the litigation culture that prevents places taking on gifts like that. It's not the fact that they were used, it's the fact that the homeless charity couldn't be 100% that there was nothing wrong with them. If they took them and something happened then the charity would be sued.

So the insurance companies tell them not to take stuff on.

That's very broad brush but you get the idea. It's why a lot of charities refuse a lot of good stuff.

Still crazy that people in need go with out and perfectly good items go to land fill instead of being put to use.

When I was in a rehab a couple of years ago, we'd get donations dropped off just about every day. The rule was that you could take what you wanted, as long as you ate/drank it pretty much right there & then. They couldn't "serve" it to you, and it was only out for a couple of hours before it went somewhere else.

Someone dropped off a bunch of wine-cooler drinks, which is funny-as-fcuk, all things considered.
