Redex - Good, Bad or Ugly?

We've all heard of the stuff and some of us have used it but it is actually worth while?

My ZX6R has been sat idle for 2+ years with about 5L of Spanish track-side fuel in it and I'm a little concerned there may be some crud in the injectors.. not a lot, just a little.

I'd like to know your experience with Redex, why you used it, and did it do what you wanted?

I've used similar stuff in cars and I'm fairly sure it improved the mpg slightly.

When I can find a decent garage I intend to run some injector cleaner through the vfr for the same reason.

Yep....used injector cleaner in cars & it's been fine. On a bike that has been sat I'd probably want to add fresh petrol to the old stuff AND a little bit of your Redex.

Run the bike at idle so you don't get stranded.

I just give my bike a tank of V-power every now and then, it has more detergent in it to keep the injectors clean, maybe running the ZX6 on that for a few tanks will help to clean it out?

I've used redex in the past and not seen any real benefit from it, maybe the injectors were not that bad in my case.

My mate came by this morning with a Jerry can of fuel and a shot of redex..

..struggled to start but cleared itself in about 15 seconds and doesn't bog at all now. Super happy with it

If you haven't got any symptoms of a dirty injector most likely you haven't got one tbh.

If it as me I would go with Stonsies idea of a few tanks of vpower or try this.

Sound similar to Kwackys problem. I suspect the fuel may have settled out and any condensed water was at the bottom of the tank. If it was foreign fuel it will have most likely had ethanol in it which is highly hygroscopic and sat over winter it will most like have had time to settle out and also some of the higher ends evaporate off into any air space at the top of the tank. A good tip is give it a good shake or bounce up and down on the forks before starting it when it's been stood a while.

Glad you got it going (y)

You do realise a good method of checking those injectors are clear is a high fuel flow rate caused by prolonged holding it on the stop (giggle)

I like your idea better than mine. Maybe I'll do it tomorrow morning before work (lol)

I had the bike running yesterday and it would idle fine but bogged under more than about half throttle at low revs. Since the fuel and Redex it doesn't bog even at full throttle from low revs (I don't usually do that, it was just to test it)

I’ve used it in diesels and petrol engines, the only time I’ve seen a significant effect was if the vehicle concerned already had a high mileage and had never seen Redex or injector cleaner.

Regular doses of V-Power are my choice these days as wel fwiw.

Does 30,000 miles of which the majority of the last 18,000 miles of ownership have been track count as high mileage? ;)

In fairness, on the road I'd use normal Shell fuel but for the track it was always Shell V-Power up until my time in Spain when I had no choice but to use Repsol

18000 miles on track (rock) (shocked)

How many days have you done Cav?

Hmm.. on reflection that's probably not right.

I've owned the bike for the last 18,000 miles. I reckon I started trackdays in the last 10,000 maybe.
Probably more than 12 days on track, around 100 miles per day (I know Pembrey is 85 miles a day and it's a slow circuit).

Maybe it was wrong to say the majority (lol) It just feels that way

Yep....100 or so sounds about right.

Defo agree with Blade bounce the bike up and down before starting. I do every so often add a bit of Redex to my tanks on the car and bike. I've never had any issues using them and also it seems to make things feel a little more smoother in the rev ranges. I tend to use standard fuel in my car and BP Ultimate on the bike (for nectar points!) With every so often Shell V Power just to mix the fuel up on the bike. Care for your bike Cav and it will care for you

Agree. Used them on off-road bikes and had two let go on me over the years. One caused the chain to jam and lunch my gearbox.

A hand chain riveter is pretty cheap and easy to do.

I know some people run into problems but I know a lot of these people install the link back to front.

The chain on my bike has done 1000's of miles and most of my trackdays and that uses a split link. Sorry guys but I'm doing it ;)

A split link is for getting you back home. A rivet link is for getting you back out.
