I dunno to be honest. It was a hard choice to make. If it was just about me I would have gone for it, but I have to put my family first. Me having to learn new areas of law, working longer hours and doing client events would have meant I wouldn't be about much for them. My wife already does too much and I don't want to put any more pressure on her. Looking further down the line, in a couple of years, she won't have to do so much for them (I hope) which means more time for her. I don't want her to have that time and be on her own.

A very considered and selfless approach.. sounds like the right choice to me although not a complete victory.

Your response will hopefully keep the gate across this particular bridge open in case your boss doesn't pick up her game.

I think you made the right choice. A 5% increase is hardly worth all the extra hours and hassle when the tax man keeps half of it.

15%+ I reckon. It would have had to have been a proper step up make me think it was worth it. There needed to be enough of it to make me think I could pay off the mortgage early, help the kids at uni and look to early retirement.

I knew I made the right choice last night. I told my wife and the reasons why. She cried and told me I was a big softie.

Kwacky well done to you. It's lovely to see family coming first approach. Like you say in a few years time you will prob only have the one of your kids living at home which should free you up a little more. Enjoy this time with your family now.

I'm being moved teams

My current boss thinks she's not producing enough work (she's not) so I'm moving back to the last partner I worked for when she comes back from maternity leave. But she's got no files so her case load needs to be built up.

I've already flagged up that this isn't the first time they've pulled this stunt then used it as an excuse not to give me a pay rise.

Nice of my current boss to have had a word with me about what's been going on. She's working from home today. I'll be sure to voice my opinion about her approach to all of this.

Sounds to me like it may be time to look elsewhere again. If they are not discussing you with you then i wouldn't be happy. Strange how your boss isnt in when your told - she should be doing it.

Sadly loyalty isn't rewarded at work very often anymore - in my humble experience of course.

With all the changes in insurance etc due to Brexit, would it be worth moving before anything happens?

Sorry to hear this Kwacky. Hope it works out.

Work life can suck at times. i'm struggling myself at the moment. The wife has mental health issues and is on medication and therapy. Plus young kids to look after. So home life is a massive stress for her, and for me tbh. The hardest thing is when she's struggling I know I'm needed, but as the only real bread winner I need to go to work. And with over an hour commute each way, plus the time at work I am out of the house for nearly 12 hours everyday.

She's getting better, but it's tough. Hopefully as the kids grow and are more independant, it will help (and at school).

Annoyingly it is very stressful at work too, so I'm getting it at both ends. I am in USA at the moment, and cancelled holiday (sons birthday)to be able to fly out over here. When I wanted some leeway to claim back the time my supervisor wouldn't allow it. I had to kick off and go to senior management to get what I wanted approved.

The last thing you need is shit at work when you've got so much going on at home.
