It depends what you've done and when you did it. Anything involving fraud or theft is not open to debate.

I don’t know about UK but I know in NZ (where mine are recorded) it is removed from your record as long as it’s a non violent crime, except for national security, immigration and criminal trials.

So applying for citizenship in Australia and security classification when working on RAAF aircraft I had to declare. Didn’t bother either application though.

The UK is pretty much the same. It's classed as spent after a certain number of years, so you don't have to declare it, but it is never removed from your records. It always comes up when I'm going for a job.

Is that just because of your industry? I don’t have to declare for non government employment thankfully!

I have to sign forms giving access to police records and although it's a spent conviction it's still on my record.

That makes sense- and sounds similar to over here......there's your public record, which anyone can see, and then a private one, which only the justice system can see.
