Another nail in the 'competition' keeping prices down argument?

Can't be good for us, the consumers.

If the MMC don't veto this deal, what is the point in us having (and paying for) a MMC.?

Tight arse! (me too)

I'm still trying to buy everything I can locally. I'm doing fine on sheep, milk, cheese, bread, honey and now even oil (rapeseed) but struggling with local vegetables. Not a lot of veg produced in the Peaks.

The sooner we stop using these massive corporate behemoths that strip profits from the producers and stash it off shore the better.

Also if this merger goes through, Walmart an American company will control 60% of the UK grocery market.

Aldi is frickin' great.....there's one or two things I might go to a Hispanic market for, but other than that...

IMHO it is almost irrelevant which supermarket you choose to shop with mate, the loss of competition & bigger players will long term feed back to us all.

What baffles me is that the argument that is being offered as a the positive advantage for consumers (and seemingly accepted as valid by those who should be opposing this) is that;
"The merger will create a bigger group, almost as big as Tesco, therefore give them greater buying power to force lower prices so they can pass on those savings"
What utter twaddle.; Surely if that were the case Tesco would always be cheaper, which isn't the case. It would only reduce the market players that the (eg; uk farmers) suppliers have to supply to. So the poor suppliers will end up being paid less & the profits made by the will be spread over a smaller number of people (reduced number of employees & board members).?

To the shareholders and board members not the consumer .

Your average farmer no longer wants to deal with supermarkets. Their business model is utter suicide if you are a supplier to them.

Many of their suppliers now are what I would call industrial farmers. Minimum outlay, minimum consideration to the environment, maximum profit.

Very true Duke. My local butcher is the farmer and yes it's more expensive but it's also considerably better. Better quality, better taste and much better animal welfare.

Vote with your wallet.

Our meat all comes from a butcher rather than a supermarket.

Some beef that supermarkets use is from India where the meat is almost white. As a result they add red colour to it to disguise the fact. No wonder cancers are rife these days.
