Remember when paper tax discs phased out and it was all transferred to online?

Well it was done to save £10 million p.a. in admin costs.

The Exchequer is apparently £100 million p.a. down in income from drivers failing to renew their road tax.

This does not surprise me in the slightest.

The whole system is fecked

There’s a regular ANPR set up on the A12 at Boreham, the van pings the offenders and fast pursuit reels them in, delivers them to the processing area and it all goes round again, they were at on Wednesday afternoon this week when I came through.

That’s a lot of manpower and equipment tied up doing what a small piece of paper and a Traffic Warden used to do.

It's very short sighted. But that's what this government seems to love doing - save a few quid without thinking about the overall impact and possible costs.

There's no reason the paperless tax system shouldn't work besides incompetence and poor planning.

Technically speaking, any vehicle not SORN'd should be taxed therefore anything not SORN'd or taxed should be fined.

ANPR cameras are setup everywhere near me on lamp posts, they will be able to tell if a SORN'd vehicle is being used on the road so fine them.

There shouldn't be an issue

That means someone has to trace the vehicles address. Send a NIP, maybe take them to court. All manpower this Govt cannot be arsed to fund.

And whilst we are talking about courts, Successive Govt has closed so many that some now have to travel 40-50 miles to their nearest Magistrates Court. So they don't bother turning up. Another vicious circle of unnecessary cost.

and there are more police stations to be shut down.

This is also stored digitally... They've somehow made this entire system terrible

the largest cost of most enterprises is labour which is why the drive for automation of systems is continuing apace despite the problems it creates .

I'm sure G4S will be along shortly to provide a cost effective solution to the problem.

When it’s Government jobs being lost then it also assumes the private sector will take up the slack otherwise it probably costs the Government more to re train the individuals or pay them to do nothing.

when it's government jobs being lost it makes it a more attractive proposition for a private concern to take it over and it's failing gives the Government a good excuse to sell it off in the name of providing a better or more competetive or more cost effective service which as far as I can see has NEVER happened
