How do you square that away with your views on freedom of movement ?duke63 wrote:People need to see using the roads as a privilege and not a God given right.

If you abuse the use of the roads or other road users, you get that right taken away. Simple really.Jack wrote:How do you square that away with your views on freedom of movement ?duke63 wrote:People need to see using the roads as a privilege and not a God given right.
Can't see how that is relevant to freedom of movement.

I get what your saying Duke and driving standards do need to improve, fully support your postion.
Sadly you pass your test once and then if you have an MOT, insurance and Road Tax unfortunately the idiots do have right of passage to use the roads obviously appropriately which too many c$nts dont and that's your point.

You're not comparing the legal definition of freedom of movement with the right to drive a car, are you?Jack wrote:How do you square that away with your views on freedom of movement ?duke63 wrote:People need to see using the roads as a privilege and not a God given right.
Freedom of movement does not mean the right to use any vehicle you chose. It's about the right to move in and out of your country and the freedom to chose where to live.

Re: What do you want to vent about today?
In order to have freedom of movement you must be allowed to use the road network - not necessarily in a vehicle , you have previously stated that freedom of movement is an important right , you are now saying it should not be a right to use the road network, I find those statements contradictory .

Use of the roads is a privilege everyone is entitled to.
Act like a dick and you should lose that privilege.

Driving a car at me when I am on a pushbike is using it as a weapon imho
I am slowly losing my nerve out there which is quite sad really as we have some beautiful roads in the UK

Re: What do you want to vent about today?
Road rage is becoming all too common imho. Good thing you weren't badly hurt Perky, car-vs-bicycle can be nasty.
Fwiw there is a flip side to this.: I live on a little rural road that is only one one lane wide. To enable two way traffic there are clearly marked passing places strategically placed along it so that vehicles travelling in opposite directions can safely pass one another. The default rule is that the vehicle that arrives first pulls into the passing place to allow the oncoming one past. As well as that there are also many wide verges that agricultural machinery often pull over on to, to enable cars to pass them rather than be stuck behind slow moving traffic.
I use my bike frequently, and when there are cars approaching I either ride on the edge so that they can pass, or pull off onto the verge (or passing place, if available).
The aforementioned rural lane happens to be part of the "Pennine Trail", and as such seems a bit of a Mecca for the Lycra brigade. -Fair enough, pleased they enjoy it, and good on them.
However far too many of these MAMILs seem to behave like utter Twunts.:
If they are travelling in the same direction as you, they will sit in the middle of the road & you are going to be suck there until you reach a more major road. They NEVER pull into a passing place to let you pass, and will generally intentionally position themselves such that a safe pass is made impossible.!
If they are travelling in the opposite direction they will ride straight past the passing places (in the middle of the road), and expect you to pull off onto the verge to let them pass. They will NEVER pause at any passing place to allow safe two way passage, despite the fact that any collision would inevitably leave them more injured.
These cyclists appear to believe that they are entitled to do whatever they want, & are entirely justified in flouting both the highway code & good manners whenever they like.
Fwiw I firmly believe that cyclists should always be accorded the same care & respect as all other road users.
However I do not think that they should have the special privileges that their selfish & self entitled attitude presumes.

Freedom of movement & driving privileges are two entirely separate issues.
One is concerned with migration, & human rights....the other with driving privileges. They're not even remotely connected.

Re: What do you want to vent about today?
St Marks I see so many mamils giving real cyclists a bad name they are shocking and dangerous
I try to talk to them about road craft etc but they don’t listen
The unwritten rule from us old cyclists is two abreast on suitable roads single out when a vehicle is behind and needs to pass
Apologies from a real cyclist for the mamils

Re: What do you want to vent about today?
They do the same in Aussie. When I lived in NZ you would never see it. The road relationship with bikes and vehicles was fine. Most roads had a foot or two of tarred verge so you always had somewhere to go and leave the lane clear when needed. Same as you Perks, we only ever rode two abreast and to single and as far left as you could go if traffic was approaching. We had stock trucks passing us and no issues.
Come to Aussie and the first month I got knocked off twice and beer cans thrown at me. The MAMILs of Aussie have screwed it for everyone here. I stopped road riding after 4 yrs. just wasn’t worth the risk and I was enjoying mountain biking more.

I once told my wife that I loved her very much, but she'd never be as much fun as either my bicycle, or my motorbike.
She moped.....

First day back in Brum and train cancelled. This Country doesn’t want to work. It’s shambolic.
