While the new bike may look outwardly similar to the current model, the truth is that barely a nut or bolt has been left untouched. The raft of changes to the engine, chassis, suspension, fairing, electronics, brakes and exhaust is extensive, and even parts that look identical have had the magic R&D wand waved over them. All of the changes, say Kawasaki, were to sate requests from the factory WSB team, with former world champion Tom Sykes playing a pivotal role in the development of the bike. Kawasaki says this is the closest thing to a factory superbike it has ever produced.

The changes to the engine are indicative of the changes to the rest of the bike, in that outwardly it appears largely unchanged, while close examination reveals that very few parts are carried over. All of the changes were aimed at keeping the bombastic power of the 2011 bike, while boosting low to mid-range power to help with acceleration out of corners. With a completely new cylinderhead and crank – that has lost 20% of its weight – Kawasaki claim the new engine’s reduction in inertia allows it to spin-up much faster.

The airbox is now two litres larger, at 10lires, giving the engine a large volume of air to draw from all helped by a ram-air intake which has been moved further forward for greater efficiency, and an air filter with a larger surface area and higher flow rate. All this conspires to deliver a claimed 207bhp (with ram air) at 13,000rpm, and 84ftlb torque at 11,500rpm.

Personally speaking and I'm sure Perkles will agree it's good to see our bikes are not so much out of date. Proves how good the 2011 bike was that it only needs a few revisions to stay relevant.

Looks like the front calipers are Brembo M50 like the panigale.

Not seen the spec just basing that from the photos.

Brakes: The front calipers are now top-of-the-range Brembo M50 cast aluminium monoblocs, radially-mounted and gripping 330mm twin discs via braided steel hoses. The discs are 200mm wider in diameter than the outgoing bike and they have grooves around the outer edge to increase their surface area and therefore cooling. At the rear a 220mm single disc is gripped by a single piston caliper and also gets steel braided brake lines. At both ends the once fashionable petal discs have succumbed to good old-fashioned round discs.

Weight has gone up to 206kg for the abs where as my abs model is 201kg.

I guess fitting all the latest and greatest electronics has to add weight.

Would be good if the qs is a retro fir option to the existing bike. Hopefully Perks maybe able to do some research and find out ;)

I see the quoted BHP figure is with the ram air. I suspect that dyno figures will have it below that 200bhp mark.

Yes a lot of manufacturers quote figures which are hard if not impossible to verify.

Will be good to see some power runs back to back with the out going model on the same dyno under the same conditions.

I guess where the engine will have improved is meeting new Euro4 regs and having the potential for tuners to produce more power in race spec.

The colours are OK its just the ZX10 graphics across the fairing that look so naff. Might be time to drop the 'Ninja' thing too.

I do like those forks.
