Tyres!!

So as I have been moaning about it for the past week or so I do need a new rear tyre. The front is fine the back has maybe 500 miles left in it. So the rear will get replaced when it goes in for its 32K service which I will book for a few weeks time

However my question is, what are peoples opinions of mixing tyres? I currently have Michelin powers on which have done me very well for the past 5K miles (this is since owning the bike 11months ago plus whatever the previous owner put on them) so pretty happy with the mileage and grip as I did a fair bit of wet weather and cold weather. Maybe not the best for wet weather grip but they are now an ageing tyre I guess. However I wouldn't mind trying out the Metezler M7RR so what are peoples views of having a M7RR rear and Power front (until that one is worn I mean)?

All opinions welcome if anyone thinks it's a stupid idea please explain why, is it from personal experience as an example.

I've always had the same make but have mixed tyres.

Personally so long as they're similar I think it's fine. I know lots of bikers who mix without problems.

What you need to ensure is that things like warm up and cool down are similar. You don't want a rear that heats up in the snow while you're running a front that needs tyre warmers in the summer.

I probably wouldn't mind mixing tyres in theory but coming into winter might change things a bit. I've got Michelin pilot power 3s on mine and they're not exactly awesome in the wet till up to temperature. I would expect the M7rr to be far better in the wet so maybe consider swapping both and saving your Michelin for summer?

Personally I would always go with a matched pair. They are designed to work together. Grip, warm up, profile etc all complement each other.

Tyres are very personal and there will always be as many opinions as people asked.

Main thing is your happy with how they feel and they give you confidence.

My OCD won't allow me to mix tyres.

I would mix tyres, I have on occasions gone full set replacement, but I tend to use up the rears two to one (F/R) so sometimes a full set is just not practical. However my mixes tend to be quiet close in performances on specifications, even if it means different manufacturers.

The lastest was M7RR on the front of the Beemer and M5 on the rear, it seems to work very well for me and in my head I have trust in what the tyre is going to do. Only recently slapped a new M5 on the back again, as I like the set up I have and will stick with it for a while. I do however mess about with pressures a little to get a feel I like.

Recon it depends on what you are going to do on them. Fast road and track I wouldn't even consider it, but if you're just going to nimble about on them then I can't see it being an issue.

However personally I wouldn't do it as it would be on my mind everytime I rode the bike

Thanks for everyones help. Love a good converstation on tyres, it's like people swear by Supercorsas being good in the rain or in the freezing cold! Stuns me personally!!

I have never mixed tyres before and have always paid the extra for a pair as I do agree all tyres are made as a pair together and the manufacturer's have done their research on them working together.

So another question as we have a lot of track guys on here...what is considered being a scrub? Basically my front is OK and can carry on so I could sell that one on however the back the middle part is worn still maybe a mm until the wear mark but the sides are perfectly legal and fine. Would they sell on for track purposes?

The only tyre people are going to buy for track Rossgo is a track specific tyre.

You may get some money for them of another road user who needs something road legal to part ex.

Hard to say without seeing them or more detail but if you see then as finished and in need of changing mist likely others will too

I have sold tyres second hand myself but they had a good amount of tread left on them.

RossGo if your happy with the pilot powers I would stick with them as some great deals available like £130 a pair.

If you fancy a change I would look at sportsmarts, m7rr or rosso 2 with the cooler, wetter times ahead any of them would be an excellent choice.

It's tough because it will be cold and wet and therefore need something to take all that into account as the powers will square through the winter time. Possibly the pilot roads but I don't want to be stuck with them for the summer when it gets to lean knee down action time!! So many decisions!

If you use your bike through the winter I can't recommend getting a tatty set of wheels and putting some touring tyres on them enough. Keep your good wheels for the summer with a set of snots on them.

I did it and somehow managed to end up with BSB super stock scrubs on both sets! Which kind of defeated the object

Purely from a devil's advocate point of view:
I recently bought a new Michelin when I wanted to try the M7rr purely because I had tread left on the front. However, realistically what is the problem with mixing tyres? How is it really any different to moto gp riders et al having a hard rear and soft front etc? The front and rear tyres have very different jobs. The rear puts power down and the front has to turn. It's not like Mr Michelin rear is going to spit its dummy out because Mr Pirelli gets to go first. Due to front and rear having such different jobs surely it is actually likely that one model is better at one job and another is better at the other?
