Waterproof textiles
Well after my son decided it would be great to go down to Newquay on the back of the Multi I had to get him some gear. I had a spare helmet & gloves and he used my waterproof boots so we popped down to Fowlers in Bristol, I got him some ' Buffalo ' ( never heard of it before ) textiles for about £100. I didn't want to pay more than that as they will hardly ever get used really.
So we set off, me in My Dainese D Dry textile jacket & trousers the ride down was 95% dry so no problems there. The ride back on Sunday was 100% wet and I mean wet !! and very very windy a terrible ride to be honest we were getting blown everywhere !.
After a while I could feel the first drops of water getting in somewhere and so it continued, I only made 1 stop for fuel as I wanted to make the journey as short as possible.
On arrival at home we stripped off in the garage I was completely soaked from the chest down on the front and completely soaked form there all the way down. I asked my son how he was he took off his cheap textiles and he was absolutely bone dry !!! not a drop had got in !!.
That makes me very pissed off especially paying for expensive dainese gear that obviously isn't up to a proper wet ride.
PS. my son thought it was hilarious....git

Re: Waterproof textiles
Wow that is very interesting.. Same here I did 3hrs solid riding in heavy rain on Sunday from Stoke to london.. And one stop for fuel.. In full Rukka goretex and goretex boots I was wet on the chest down to the crotch.. I just don't get it.. These have been 100% over last year. Maybe I need go up a few levels in the range but that's ridiculous money. I can't justify. 550 for a set I thought was expensive.. Soaked on way up Friday and soaked on way back Sunday. Not pleased

Re: Waterproof textiles
No not round the neck Duke, from just below the chest downwards was soaking wet, I could feel it getting in around the waist area somewhere, even though I had both parts zipped together, this was the first test in really heavy rain and a FAIL !!duke63 wrote:Sounds like water is getting in around the neck for both of you.
Unless the wind was getting water into places it normally doesn't get into ? but as they are designed to be ridden on motorways etc they should stand up to this .
I did get a few drops in round the neck but very minimal.

That's the main reason he was drier I suspect...Monty wrote:To be fair the pillion isn't sitting in a 100mph water jet

Re: Waterproof textiles
Yeah I agree I was most probably sheltering him form the oncoming torrent of rain but still surprised that a relatively cheap suit didn't leak at all. It was incredibly windy most of the rain was coming sideways on or at least that's how it felt.

Re: Waterproof textiles
I thought the same about you sheltering him and has to be the reason.
Out of interest which model textiles did you buy your son ?

Re: Waterproof textiles
Some stuff called 'buffalo' never heard of it before but it the right price to pay for something that will be used rarely.

Re: Waterproof textiles
Very interesting. I always thought to be waterproof- go for Goretex. My cheap RST textiles do not keep the water out. Probably why I've become a fair weather biker.

Re: Waterproof textiles
Anyone recommend some waterproof summer gloves.
All the ones I try on have thick winter liners.

Re: Waterproof textiles
Those Held Air and Dry I have. By their very nature of having a waterproof liner. They will be a bit thicker than most summer gloves. Ultimately only goretex ever works as 100% waterproof.

Re: Waterproof textiles
Duke is there more than one model of air n dry gloves.
The ones I'm finding are in the touring section but they have perforated leather on the palms which I'm not sure I like as obviously weakens the leather in one of the most vulnerable locations regards abrasion in an accident. I'm assuming there is a more sports/race style glove that doesn't have this compromise in safety but cannot find them or the actual Held website unfortunately.

Re: Waterproof textiles
Is that the one you have Duke ? What model of air n dry is it called do you know. Can't seem to find it anyway but sounds like exactly what I need and I know your really happy with your pair. I can't even find the Held manufacturers own website.

I had a pair of A'Stars 365 Goretex gloves. I really liked them. Lost one though, gutted. I've kept the one I didn't lose invade the other turns up.

Re: Waterproof textiles
Heard good things about astars 365. How thick is the liner compared to a winter glove ? As I want something which is nearly as thin as a race glove but sill waterproof. I know I want my cake and eat it, haha
