Post by duke63 »

I know its 80 years ago and very different times but is anyone really surprised when you know their family background?

Sad the Sun is trying to stir this up. In 1933 ffs. In 1933 they really didn't know the extent of what Nazi Germany's plans were or indeed the resentment for it after the war.

Cheap, crappy journalism. I wouldn't wipe my arse on most of the papers.

I don't see the problem. Hitler was popular in Europe in the early 30s. It was likely he was going to be coming to the UK and at some point may well have met the Royals. The salute was something he had brought back and many around Europe and in the States were using it.

It's a real non-story and timed to distract from the shit the current government is up to.

Hitler popular in the 30's seriously ????

His SS storm troopers who where formed at this time under the guise of the Nazi party sports and social club were beating anyone up who weren't subscribed to his Nazi politics. I guess he was popular as his bully boys enforced such and maybe in certain circles but I wouldn't say he was mainstream popular.

Agree with Cookies comments The Sun stirring something up that wasn't even there.

Hitler was excellent when it came to propaganda. He had the majority of the public behind him. Anything that wasn't going well for Germany was blamed on immigrants and dissidents. It's tactics we still see today.

In the eyes of most of the royal family, Hitler was the only thing stopping the the Bolsheviks from chopping their heads off. Plus don't forget they are actually German.

Hitler had massive support in both the US and the UK in the 30s. Both politically and financially.

The history of royalty throughout Europe is quite fascinating and how much of them were interconnected. No wonder they were all mad as hatters with all that inbreeding.

The swastika prior to the Nazi's using it was a symbol of good fortune. I think it was sued in Raf planes up until the battle of Britain

Most of the Suns articles are crap. They just stir so much shit up. Problem is its for people who just believe everything they read or hear. There's some bits you can believe but something like this is just minor in my opinion. People were loving how Hitler were keeping his nation in shape (fit) etc what everyone didn't know was that he was building soldiers with these people!

Always reminds me of the classic Blackadder quote when Blackadder is interrogating for German spies in the hospital

[Blackadder is interrogating Captain Darling who is suspected of being a German spy]

Captain Darling: I'm as British as Queen Victoria!

Captain Blackadder: So your father's German, you're half German, and you married a German!

Just turned on the tv to watch the morning news and this is what they are talking about (facepalm)

At least one of the presenters is informed and pointing out the points a lot of you have in this thread

I had a very interesting conversation with a German colleague back in the winter, I was in Nürnberg (Nuremberg is what the Americans changed it to as they couldn't pronounce it correctly) and visited the remains of the Nazi Parade area (see below) and stood on the same spot Hitler did - very eerie indeed.
image.jpg
The conversation ranged around the reasons and politics surrounding Hitlers rise to power, but what surprised me was how he was perceived at that time by the average Germans themselves, it turns out that unlike today's Politicians every promise he made was fulfilled, work returned, old people were provided for and generally things looked to be on the up, of course the full horror of his "vision" was yet become public, had that been known at the beginning it's highly unlikely he'd have gone anywhere except to jail.

In the unlikely event we actually had a politician now that actually delivered on his manifesto promises, could we honestly say that we wouldn't be delighted and return him to power again and again?

Interestingly, the financial load imposed on Germany post-1918, sounds not unlike the conditions Ms Merkel is trying impose on Greece currently. It really does seem as if we don't learn from history.
