Dot4 v Dot5

Post by Kwacky »

I was going to bleed the brakes on the SX.

I thought I had some Dot5 but it's Dot4.

Is that going to be ok for a bike like the SX? I've always used Dot5 so I'm probably worrying over nothing.

Never used dot 5 ever tbh. Isn't it a silicone based fluid ?. Always use a high quality dot 4 with high boiling point to reduce fade on track.

Normally go for motul rbf600. There is better but very good spec for the price point. Never had fade on track with this so more than enough for a road bike.

Ask Opie oils for tech advice if struggling to decide what to use.

Isn't Dot4 the standard stuff?

I don't think you should mix Dot4 and Dot5 but they also do a Dot5.1 which you can mix with Dot4. Confusing.

It's a bottle of Castrol high performance Dot4 so it should be good enough

Dot5 is silicone based by the way,

Dot4 and Dot5.1 are not.

Last bleed I did with the same castrol high performance stuff. Its good stuff with a high wet and dry boiling point.

Good job I changed it. This is the fluid with a lot of the fresh stuff I used to flush it out.

I might do another flush tomorrow just to make sure the system has been cleaned out.
