Plane crash in the Alps

An Airbus A320 airliner has crashed in the French Alps between Barcelonnette and Digne, French aviation officials and police have said.

The jet belongs to the German airline Germanwings, a subsidiary of Lufthansa.

The plane had reportedly been en route from Barcelona to Dusseldorf and was carrying 142 passengers and six crew.

French President Francois Hollande said: "The conditions of the accident, which have not yet been clarified, lead us to think there are no survivors."

Sad news.

Tbh I think what he's saying that given the known circumstances i.e it lost height steadily for 8 mins until it hit ground, as well as coming in uncontrolled on a mountain means it looks bad, and there's not much chance of anyone surviving something like that, although of course anything is possible.

My thoughts are with anyone on that flight or their families, I've flown with Germanwings in the past and they're a good bunch, I can only think something catastrophic happened to a vital system on board. Fingers crossed they find out why it happened.

As they have recovered the black box hopefully some explanation can be offered.

Seems to be too many planes crashing at the moment. Peoples safety has to improve as tragic losses like this shouldn't happen, life is too precious.

In sure i heard that last year was the safest so far this century for air travel.

Sounds awful, but one of the first thing I did is check the engine types....and saw that as they're CFM56s it's not down to my business. In reality the amount of air travel has increased massively and the number of accidents is lower, though any is tragic.

Looking at the fact the aircraft didn't change course and rapidly lost height with no mayday, my first guess would be there was some form of rapid decompression that caused hypoxia in the pilots....but who knows.

I feel so sorry for the families of those that died today.

Some expert was saying the same scenario.

But surely they would have an audible alarm to advise of a drop in cabin pressure and if required deploy the oxygen masks ?

The guy on BBC news this morning said that pilots are told to work in a set order - aviate - navigate - communicate. He wasn't surprised that no call had been put out if the crew are trying to bring the aircraft down to 10,000 feet.

I travel a lot by plane as I work in sales and I fookin hate flying ,I cant get my head around safety standards staying the same with all these cut price airlines and dodgy little airports operating.Its been a terrible year or so for airline disasters I feel so sorry for the familys it must be so hard to hear that unwanted news your loved one is dead.Tragic

I find it hard to believe anyone would leak news like that to the press. If they did they should be prosecuted.

I wonder how long before pilots start having to go through some serious mental health tests?
