Depression is not easy to hide especially severe depression I don't agree with that.

Also he was assessed as medically fit and a comprehensive medical would have highlighted depression.

Does the German check up for pilots include a psychiatric assessment? I don't know the answer, it's a genuine question.

Speaking from experience depression can be hidden and hidden well ,I don't suppose we will really know what happened on that plane but whatever it was a tragic loss of life

Agree a very tragic loss.

I'm not saying it is a cover up just its a possible scenario and personally speaking I'm suspicious.

It seems it was suicide and murder/manslaughter , his parents have been taken to a secret location for their safety allegedly.

It also contained dogs who were on there way to a new life as they had been rescued apart from one who didn't make the flight as he didn't have his vaccinations early enough to make it this time

I'm afraid I have no sympathies with the pilot, depressed or not.

From someone who has suffered deep depression not once have I ever thought about taking anyone with me when the dark hole looked too big to climb out of.

I think it's why I surround myself with animals as I could never leave them alone and it's my reason to get through some really dark days.

I suppose there will be some big lawsuits as I feel depression can be seen if the psychological tests were stringent enough. Lets hope that now things will be changed so it can never happen again . Maybe fingerprint technology so pilots can always gain access .

So sad for all those relatives who had loved ones on board and so sad for the animals who thought they were going to a happy life.

If the pilot hadn't died that day, I would have gladly given him assistance and not lose a wink.

Finger print technology won't help as the lock system is over ridden from the cockpit in case terrorists force the staff to enter the code and they could also force a pilot to put his finger print on the panel.

Two pilots at all times in a secure cockpit seems the logical answer to me.

Suppose that's true Blade, I did read this morning why planes can't be remotely controlled from the ground as it seems technology is available.

This could be a great way of stopping this happening too

Unfortunately life is such that you cannot legislate for every possible happening.

Even with two pilots, if one is of a mind to destroy a plane full of passengers it would not be impossible for him to overpower the other one way or another.

The latest I've seen relates to his illness. By all accounts there were sick notes for him which he had torn up.

The police have said in that article that there's no political or religious motive that they're aware of.

Either way I'll believe him....it only takes one motivated individual to bring a plane down, simply for the reason that they are prepared to sacrifice themselves in the process.

Suicide and depression are subjects I've dealt with in a close friend and 2 family members, unfortunately our close friend succeeded at her second attempt, but our family is still together thanks to the all too meagre National Health medicos.

Duke is 100% correct in saying it is both well hidden and can change the thought processes and considerations that person would give to others. That said I cannot feel sorry for him and hope he burns in whatever passes for hell wherever he is now, the murder of those people is unforgivable.

Depression is a illness like any other its just it affects the brain rather than a leg/heart/arm etc. which is probably, along with the heart, the most improtant organ in the body.

I can have sympathy for his illness but not for what he has done.

Saying that the system has failed this guy somewhere. The doctor concerned should have been able to inform his employers direct that he was not fit to fly a plane, he was not in a fit state of mind to do that himself.

I do wish the media would spend less time going on about the pilot who caused this tragic event and deal more with the pilot who tried to prevent it and the poor innocents caught up in it all.

The public struggles to deal with mental health issues, this isn't helping to develop an understanding.
