Debit card cloned

Post by Kwacky »

Checked my account this morning to see 2 pay as you go payments to o2. Called Lloyds bank who were very good and have cancelled my card and refunded the money. They told me that the card had this morning been registered at an Apple store so it looks like they were about to use it again.

Keep an eye on your statements. A quick google shows that these o2 payments are very common.

Sucks doesn't it?? Had it happen twice, and even if the bank is on it it's still a pain.

Lucky it didn't go on for too long mate could of got a bit nasty. I was listening to this old lady a few days back and sounded like some workers cloned her credit card and they got her to tell them the pin. She was very old and frail felt so sorry for her. She didn't really know what was going on

I know of another cloning at a petrol station. Apparently they have a camera hidden in the suspended ceiling ;)

I've had my card blocked a couple of times due to suspected cloning..

Only problem I've been left with is being high on the anti-fraud list, any payment out of the ordinary ends up with my card being blocked now. Fortunately the criteria are getting a bit better now and it doesn't happen too often.. If it does a quick phone call usually sorts it out.

Did you buy a Lenovo laptop last year? Might be worth checking this

My company credit card has been cloned a number of times....it was even fraudulently used to pay a court fine to HM Courts once. (facepalm)

HSBC are very hot on any unusual transactions now...mobile phone companies, Apple payments, Microsoft..seem to ring alarm bells for them every time even if its me making the payment.

Nope, I don't own a Lenovo laptop.

According to Google the O2 scam is well known. Scammers use a 16 digit number generator and test that through the o2 site to pay for mobile phone top ups. Once the site accepts a card it is cloned. Both o2 and the banks need to up their game.

Could have sworn you bought a Lenovo.

Barclaycard's fraud department drives me nuts. I've been travelling to Italy a few times year for the last 12 years with work and nearly every time I go they stop transactions based on purchases being out side of my normal pattern. It got to the point that I started phoning them up to tell them when I was going.

I was looking at one but a high spec refurb came up and I bought that instead.

Lloyds have done the same to me. To be honest I prefer that. I have called them before when I've been going somewhere outside of Europe. It saves a lot of hassle.

Hsbc can be notified online that you plan to use your card abroad

Still doesn't stop some miserable German petrol pump attendant refusing it on the grounds you are British mind.
