Insurance

Post by Kwacky »

It's all a scam, I'm sure.

Had a renewal for my dog's insurance. £45 a month. For one dog. Nothing in his previous medical history, never bitten anyone, house dog, chipped and fully up to date with vaccinations.

Last year it was £19 a month.

I don't pay £45 a month for any other insurance.

Email sent telling them where to go.

Mines a bit expensive but hasn't changed in price and had lots of high claims.
£72 a month for a Great Dane, £33 for lab, and £18 for a terrier x

Pet insurance can be such a ripoff. My dogs have always been insured, most of the few claims I made have been big (major cancer etc) and every time they have refused to pay up until I have argued and only then do they pay minus fees, minus costs for various elements of the treatment they didn't cover, for enormous excesses because of this and that. This has been with 3 different companies so I remember.

And of course as soon as I claimed the monthly insurances went through the roof :(

I don't bother now.

Wow £123 on dog insurance alone that's a heck of a bill.

I assume Great Danes are considered a high risk dog so to speak ?

I think I'm going to see what other insurance companies are offering. If they're going to charge me that much I might not bother. The excess is pretty high so I'm not going to be saving much.

The trap with these insurances is pre-existing conditions. Once the dogs have them it you have to declare them to any new company and they load the premium accordingly in my experience.

They also seem to go up significantly over the age of 6 :(

Is part of the problem ridiculously high vet bills?

Yes, check the details of the insurance. At a certain age its barely wrth insuring them. It's probably better just to pay that money into a seperate accoutn for the time you may need it.

Pet insurance is a minefield . I am with Netplan and always have been, The bill is always settled directly with the vet so no finding money upfront

My last Danes biggest bill was 7.5k and a year of hydrotherapy and all I had to pay was the 100.00 excess so all good.

Yes Danes are high risk they suffer many ailments and live a relatively short life compared to other breeds. My oldest was Sheila who died at 9 years

I'd love a Great Dane, but they are fragile and they don't last long enough. I want them to live the same length of time as me :(

Cookie, they are called the heartbreak breed

I have always had them or fostered them and I find them adorable but you do have to be prepared to be strong enough to cope with so many ailments.
My new girl had a gastropexy done at 5 months which basically anchors the stomach down as bloat is the biggest killer
All my previous dogs have had it and you literally have less than an hour to get them emergency treatment.

It's so nice when they burp after dinner as the gas isn't trapped
