Talking to someone today who said they are not even allowed to take them into the office at all now.

Anyone else come across rules quite that strict?

yeah, just turned off for us, although during breaks you can use them.

I'm not surprised thugh, as there's always people who take the piss and ruin it for others.

Due to the high risk nature of my job, we can't have them anywhere out of the accommodation area. The engineers/planners etc who are offices are in the accommodation area can take them to their desks, but it's kind of pointless. No reception or Wifi. Only wifi in one spot, up at heli admin.

On the shop floor the staff are not allowed their phones but in the lab where I work its a bit more flexible.

No mobile phones on site or a designated area set a side for mobile phone use is becoming more common within the construction industry.

If you need to use the phone whilst on site, you need to ask permission of the senior site foreman, giving the reason why you need to make a call from that spot and not in the designated area.
I'm allowed to take photographs with the permission of the person I'm visiting.

I'm also working on Rolls Royce in Derby. Not all of the time but on the odd occasion, if I'm working in certain areas, I do have to hand my phone and iPad in to the security gate house.

Different fields I guess.....I'm absolutely expected to have a phone on me at all times.
I suppose the kicker is that I very rarely use a cellphone...I'll go for days without using it.
And while we're on...this I-phone 5 thing is a POS....I don't like it.

I'm allowed to use mine as I please, I just have to remember the client is paying for my time. Too much phone could equal no contract so I keep it on silent and don't take the piss with it.

Workers aren't allowed phones on them at our place only at break tines. Team leaders and above are allowed them on their person however in our place its petty dusty and quiet physical work so not many people actually keep it on them. Although we do have a 66 year old bloke who won't take any crap from anyone and he brings his phone in and charges it all day! Our supervisor has his phone in his top pocket and your watch him send Facebook messages and texts all day. Quiet amusing when I'm on the pc next to him (well his office is right next to mine) and your take a quick look! But then again he's got more of a computer based work load so suppose he might have a tad more time on his hands!!

I wouldn't work for a company that didn't trust me to do the job I'm paid to do.

I was always expected to have my phone on and with me, in fact as part of our lone working policy it was mandatory, the only places I visited in that time that disallowed phones were oil/gas establishments, Military research establishments and some construction sites, although if I attended an emergency all the rules normally went out the window...

Best advice I ever got was from my old Manager when we were first given phones in the early 90's, I asked what the policy on private calls was, he said "Don't take the p*ss and everyone's happy Son". No one did and free personal calls were always ok, even working abroad. Good guy old George, for a Manc that is. ;)

It'd be hard to do my job without one, which isn't to say that I don't remember the days when we didn't have them. Makes me laugh when I remember the 'antiquated' days of pay phones and collect calls.

Yup, remember those days as well, we were all issued with pagers, one page for the office wanting you to call, two for my wife wanting me to call her, three or more and it was one of my colleagues winding me up. :D

My last place didn't allow mobiles on site. It was due to the high volumes of solvents on site. Other places have allowed you to have phones on site but not use them, for the same reason.
