Retiring from biking

Post by Kwacky »

So what's going to stop you from riding?

That video doing the rounds when the guy gets killed is pretty shocking but it'll take more than that to make me quit.

I'm hoping it's old age, when it becomes physically too tough for me to ride a bike.

I'll stop if and when I don't enjoy it anymore. I know it has potentially horrific consequences, but then so do a lot of hobbies and pastimes, unfortunately most of the other ones with similar risks involved don't hinge on some random persons shortcomings as a major part of the risk.

When I crash through the pearly gates at 92 with a fireblade as my mobility scooter, knee down and laughing my tits off.

There are only 2 things that would stop me:

1) the un-thinkable.
2) very nearly having the un-thinkable.

I've made an agreement with Mrs Nutz that if I have an accident bad enough to put me in hospital for more than a couple of stitches then I'll hang up my gloves. There may need to be a discussion about track only riding tough ;)

I'll only stop when I'm not physically capable... Or when it's 'too late' to give up. It's not just a mode of transport, it's a lifestyle choice..

I'm going to very childishly state that if I can still get on it I'm going to ride it. Got the same plan with the Mrs!

I don't know what will make me hang up my helmet.
Probably some circumstance that, as I am writing, I can't even conceive.

Physical problems would be when my time is up and each year they get progressively worse. I'm not physically strong anymore and due to health problems already know that as each year closes I have to wait until spring and see how the first ride goes to see if its still possible.

Shorter rides now but I still enjoy it but I know in the not too distant future it will come. It will be a sad time but I have always had many outdoor pur suits that I can do all year round and many hobbies so although depressing it is something I have equipped my mind to accept at some point

I started at 16, crashed into the back of a car at 17, smashed my bike to bits and sold it as scrap. I ended up in an ambulance. I gave up biking that day for good, or so I thought. I bought a K2 600 when I was 46. A gap of nearly 30 years! It's in the blood 8)

My dad rode, his dad rode, my uncle raced and the Parker brothers (speedway riders from way back) are related http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Parker_(speedway_rider" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norman_Parker_(speedway_rider" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;)

Can't see me giving up in the foreseeable.
